DO ... You just say Hell with it and play bar table pool with bar banger

Learned a ton of subhuman nature (drunks :D) over the years. Not big on hustling even though that's where it all started many years ago. Not me per se but the players I hung out with and the champs I admired. I have a comfortable time - not stuck for anything, no guns to pay. lol...

Oh the Missus! I practice and she just plays whenever, but still can almost keep the pace. She’s just naturally like that.

We have a neighborhood bar that has really good chicken paprikash and burgers. Little barbox with huge pockets. Every once in a while we’ll stop in and get an order to go if I get a little extra overtime.

So we’re standing around waiting for our order and this dude is talking to his buddy about how important it is to use “English.”

I told my wife, “We are playing these dudes.”

“We have a table, let’s just get our food and go home.”...

So I walk up and the loud guy says, “you laying down some quarters bro!?!”

“Oh no guys, I’m just picking up some supper and thought my wife and I could play you all a quick game.”

They break dry and I break up a cluster and leave them almost straight in on a solid. They take that and miss and my Missus comes to the table.

She made the first 4 and rolled a little too far for position. “She can’t bank that,” says loud guy.

You don’t want to tell my wife she can’t do something. She says, “no I have to bank it,” and leaves herself perfect on the next ball.

Dude slumped his shoulders and told his buddy, “Dude, we are about to get our asses kicked.”

As she set up on the 8 ball I picked up her purse and slung it over my shoulder like I was waiting for her to come out of the changing room at a clothing store.

Yet, she still doesn’t want to play out of the house.

It's usually foreigners who haven't figured out where any pool halls are (irprobably have no interest in playing a game they'd lose), they get comfy playing other bangers and think they are good. They are usually the biggest idiots, and the most fun to humiliate.

You get bonus points if you beat them in front of their super quiet Chinese girlfriends that just sit there in the corner, but I’m sure you knew that.

if your say, a B player or better you likely will never lose in a bar. unless you run into a good road player and then only lose one game.

I wonder if that dynamic is going to change at all with Diamond bar boxes starting to come into favor over Valleys?

When rambling in strange places on a nice weekend drive I was more likely to find a seven foot table than nine foot tables or first choice, ten footers.

The best thing about seven foot tables, especially playing eight ball, it is easy to hide your skill. A sneaky old road player scouted me about fourteen hours before he decided it wasn't luck. I always remember what he said. "First night I thought it was luck. Second night I still thought it might be luck. Nobody gets as lucky as you do three nights in a row." Busted!

One of the best reasons to like bar boxes is largely gone now, the mud ball. Many people hated the mud ball but once I accepted it I realized that big heavy ball was far easier to control than one that weighed the same and was the same size as the other balls. I always called the mud ball the eight hundred pound gorilla. When they started getting rare I almost danced a jig to find one, money in the bank! Keith McCready is a fan of the mud ball also I believe. Working from shakier memory now but I think Dave Matlock liked it too. Magic could happen with the mud ball and a player that understood it.

One compensation for no mud ball any longer is the Diamond seven footers. I don't call them bar boxes. Nice playing tables that are kind to old eyes.

As far as the people playing on bar boxes, they tend to be less uptight than those playing on the big track. Might as well enjoy myself.

The last time I had something ridiculous happen it was on a big table. Playing a fourteen year old hillbilly boy in a bar, he knocked a ball off the table. After he fetched it he hurled it on the table as hard as he could. "Around and around she goes, where she stops nobody knows!" The only amazing thing is that the ball stayed on the table. It wasn't likely we would ever play again and there was no cash involved so I didn't say a word!

We always called the Valley magnetic-particle ball the 'mudball'. The big CB was just that, the big cue ball. The mudball was a standard size cb that had chopped-up metal pieces instead of one big weight in the middle. They were like playing with a wad of heavy dough. Tulsa legend Fat Randy could really gin it with what we called the mudball. He never liked the big cb, that was Matlock's specialty. Dave could/can do things with that big rock that border on black magic.

Most people wouldn't believe what was possible with that big off colored ball. Shape within a quarter inch or less, cue ball paths within a tiny fraction of a degree. I spent over five thousand hours intensely dedicated to mastering the cue ball. I didn't get there to Mosconi level but I got pretty close. For the next ten years I probably spent as much time "accidentally" getting out of shape to slow the game down as I did playing shape for anything else.

The heavy cue balls were OK but when I saw that big brown sucker on the table I knew I was in a killing field, I was going to make some money.

I never got to perfect with the big ball but the ball did what it did with very little effort; well withing my accuracy zone.

That is the real deal with the big ball. Once people quit trying to get it to act like a ball the same weight as the object balls they learn that the eight hundred pound gorilla is pretty special in it's own right. Shots that require a lot of focus and concentration to get position using a standard cue ball are easy with a big ball.

I go years without stumbling on a big ball now but I am a happy camper when I do just for old time's sake.

Their girlfriends aren't quiet, they just don't speak any English :ROFLMAO: which is the only thing their 15 year senior wannabe bar-pro partner can speak. She is probably typing him good luck messages on WeChat (or doing his next months worth of groceries on her phone). I always counted that as two points!
