Do you miss because you jump up, or do you jump up because you miss?

For me, the jump up reaction tends to happen after the cue ball is struck, and it feels "wrong".

I think I'm just trying to get as far away from the bad shot as quickly as possible, maybe because I don't want anyone to associate that shot with me.

"How could I have anything to do with that shot? I'm standing all the way over here." :)

Well, which is it?

Jumping up from a shot is a common mistake like pulling your head out too early to see where the ball goes in golf or baseball. It changes the point you will likely contact on the CB, and is often the cause of missed shots. Thus I think you miss more because you jump up during the shot.

We miss for a variety of reasons.

One of the biggest reasons that we miss is because we move our bodies during the stroke. Jumping, raising, moving to the side(s) etc are all movement reasons that we miss. There are others but this about covers the moving.....

We would probably miss a shot if we "drop" during a stroke but I have never seen it.

If one follows through 100% there is no way he will lift his or her body. Efren, at times does extended follow through so he stays still.

The best fix for this is to tie barb wire around your neck and your ba**s, this will cure the jumping up on the shot.

well, which is it?

My routine is...before i swing down on the shot, ive made up my mind to keep my head down to a count of one thousand, two thousand, three thousand after the ball disappears. If i miss the shot, i will keep my head down until all the balls stop rolling. If you do this for three weeks, your balance will change and will become a girl .
Best of Luck !

Cue over head.

I heard that Steve Davis learned to stay down by having his father or coach (i don't remember which) holding a cue over his head.

Jumping up can be caused by having to much weight on the back leg. If you are nervous in addition to this you will often jump up. This can cause you to miss. But I think most of the time you jump up because you subconciously know that you missed, and failed to correct it in time. I have noticed that people that jump up a lot often use a lot of body english and steering (Is that the right word? Not talking about bulls but sideways movement of the cue) as well. Which are both methods used to try to correct misallignment and aiming errors.

When I have difficulty staying down I try to use breathing and relaxation techniques while over the ball. For me jumping up or moving slightly during the shot mostly happens if I'm very nervous. If I focus on my breathing and following through I very rarely move on the shot.

Yes, that Steve Davis thing works! With teams I played on in the '80s, we used that technique in practice. The result was two State and one National championship.

You demonstrate that QUITE WELL, in your pool instructional videos.

So, your mind tells you that you have missed. And that event causes your mind to tell your body to jump up. And as a result, you jump up?

Is this the correct chain of events?

It is true the mind orders the head/body to move; however, there is normally a split second lag between when the brain issues the command and the head actually move; with eyes communications to the brain is much faster than brain to muscles, the eye saw the miss way before the ball reaches close to pocket; and brain reacts immediately to complete the shot routine starting by head and then body movement, but due to the time delay in muscles movement, its time comes after we realize we miss or completed the shot. So if you follow through you extend that time a little further and it looks like you stayed down enough

If you close your eyes when you fire the shot there is high chance you will stay down, unless your ears detects something.

Jimmy, it was your DVD set that taught me to stay down...many thanks for that. Now if ONLY I could remember to do that every time!
