Does anyone here remember Herb Wilmot

Herb worked on the movie Pool Hall Junkies but before that was the Tournament Director for the WPBA. I knew him many years ago and heard that he died in Las Vegas last year. Does anyone know what happend to him? He was a pretty heavy drinker but truely a stout promoter of the game of Pool.

This broke my heart!

> I sure do,and miss him. I don't know exactly what lead to his death, but it sucks.

Herb used to run a series of pro-tour qualifiers in Memphis, particularly at Bartlett Billiards. These tournaments got you either a spot in a PBTA tournament, the U.S. Open,or in one case, your tour card for a year. Depending on how high the entry fee was and the turnout, you got your entry fee paid, along with possible airfare,500 cash for the trip.etc.

These were among the very best-run tournaments I've ever played in. There was no bullshit with match times,no drama with other players, and a great atmosphere. I played in just about all of them.

Herb had virtually NO talent as a player however. His game was built on a bulldog spirit and a work ethic that got him a spot playing football at Alabama under Bear Bryant. He eventually got to shortstop speed, capable of running 2-3,even 4 racks on occasion, solely on repetition and drive.

He was always quick to encourage, laughed a lot,and even had an odd quirk with his playing cues. He played and broke with 2 identical plain birdseye McDaniels, with the only difference being his break cue was 1 oz lighter, and they both had different ferrule materials. He was one of the good guys,at least when I saw him. Tommy D.

As nice a guy as I ever met in pool. Always willing to lend a hand anywhere it was needed. And didn't ask for anything in return. A rare bird indeed.

I was sick when I heard he had passed away. He looked healthy to me last time I saw him and he wasn't that old. What a shame. It's true, the good die young.

Do you live in Memphis?

I remember Herb hosted a huge tournament at Fitzgeralds Casino in Tunica and I was fortunate to play in it. I made it to 5-6th place in the Womens side. I met up with Peg Ledman who put me out.

Back then I lived in Memphis and played at Billiards East, The Rack, Bartlett Billiards, Southhaven Rec and High Pockets. I heard the Billiards East is now closed and Rowsey now owns High Pockets. Is that true? Everybody knew me as DEE...

Wow, That was a while back!

> Yep,Bill owns High Pockets now. He seems to be a little more progressive with the way he promotes his various tournaments and other things, which is good, that is my favorite room in the world since Starcher's in Akron closed.

I wish I did live in Memphis,I'd be a whole lot better player if I didn't have to drive 2 hours to play on a 9 footer, and have to beg people to play more than an hour.

We've known each other for a LONG time Dee,Tommy D.

If your ever get to HOTlanta

Herb was a sweet guy and was missed when he stopped working w/ the WPBA. Very unique charactor and well liked by all that knew him.

Were you in the WPBA

howdy dee,
Once upon a time he was a bartender in peabody Hotel, Memphis and around the same time he also had a TV show once a week for 30 minutes.

I had the honor of meeting and talking with Herb and seeing him at several WPBA events. I never realized he died though and am truly saddened by the news. He was such a nice man. :frown:
