Does it upset you when....

I seem to see this a lot more in the past year or so... maybe I have just finally noticed it....?

I also notice when they execute a safe they check out their shot to see if they really hooked me or not before they sit down, but this makes sense to me more.

I haven't let it bother my play, but it has perturbed me a little. I don't have the heart to do it back (yet). It's starting to be so rampant, I might have to start, LOL!

I don't play as good when I'm upset so I try not to let trivial stuff like that bother me. Bad rolls are part of the game.

i think everybody does it and im definitely guilty of doing the celebratory "YES" body language when i get a lucky roll. when i purposely play a safety shot i also check out how i left him. but hey you got to remember.... safeties win games. if you cant run then hide. we all do it.

This seems inconsistent to me. When your emotions change, so does your play. This is NOT to say it is a bad thing. Many people play a little better when they get a little mad. Many people fall apart when they get a lot mad. It IS important to understand these effects, if possible. Pleasures of Small Motions and A Mind for Pool get into this subject nicely.

Dave

I love both of those books!

Maybe it is bothering me as everyone keeps saying, but I don't think so b/c don't let bad rolls get to me. I accept the good and the bad, on both sides.

If anything, if I see they are "checking out" if they got lucky or not and yearning for the accidental hook, it makes me smile to myself and gives me more strength. :) So, you are right, it makes me play a little better.

So, it's not the roll, it's my opponents actions that makes me shake my head in disbelief, which gives me the strength. ;)

Snarky!!

... What has really got my goat though is just what the hell is SNARKY?

snark-y (sn-r'kē)
adj. snark-i-er, snark-i-est Slang
1. Rudely sarcastic or disrespectful; snide.
2. Irritable or short-tempered; irascible.
[From dialectal snark, to nag, from snark, snork, to snore, snort, from Dutch and Low German snorken, of imitative origin.]

When I see people really going out of their way to look at the bad/hooked roll, usually they get in your way or make "snarky" noises or comments... which is what Trigger was originally posting about, I think. :p

When I'm doing the looking, I'm trying to see what the heck I did wrong/right and why... and I do try to get out of the way quickly and not comment.

Edited to add: I think I'll start using the word "snorken" instead, much funnier word!! :)

it doesn't really bother me much because I get lucky and hook someone sometimes on accident but I will usually laugh and say "sorry I wish I could have done that on purpose"

These things don't bother me too much, at least it means I get a turn at the table. What does irritate me is when I'm in the middle of a run out and my opponent can not find their seat. They wander around the table as if I am going to miss and give them another opportunity.
Another issue is when I am running and get to a tough shot. I get down to see if it goes or if another ball is blocking the pocket. As I am looking I notice my opponent is next to me or on the other side of the table looking. This is irritating. There is no need to get out of your chair unless it is your shot. I understand if it looks like a close hit, you may want to call over the tournament director. But otherwise, just stay in your chair until it is your turn.

On an intentional safe, I usually check out my work afterwards to see if I got there or not. When I miss a ball and accidentally leave safe, I will probably look, too, but most of the time its to see if I had gotten the shape on my next ball if I had made the ball I missed. I'll also look to see what my opponent is shooting to make sure I don't need to call a ref, but most of the time I can see that from my seat.

I completely agree with you on this one, Shayla. Either way, a quick check is all that it will require, no more than a few seconds.

As far as getting upset, I try to only let the things I can control upset me.

No. I could really care less. Playing 9 ball with current rules especially, it happens. Have I done it, don't know that either and don't care.

simple... but effective

I have noticed what the pros in the chair do. They wait until their opponent has left the table before approaching.

You rarely see them run into each other, if ever. Table etiquette. Let em check the leave or whatever, just wait till they leave the table to get up and shoot. ;)

Ray

This is exactly what I do in these situations.
What's the rush to get to the table? Its not going anywhere.

Also, I never check to see if I "fluked" a hook. I'll find out soon enough when my opponent chooses to either "kick" at the ball or shoot directly at it.

If I happen to fluke a particularly nasty hook (i.e. the cue ball rolls around and freezes to the back of a ball that is not the object ball), I just give a slow apologetic head shake to let my opponent know that I realize that I just got very lucky from a poorly executed shot.

It also doesn't bother me in the least when my opponent misses his planned shot and "flukes a hook". I'm just happy to be getting back to the table. Its tough to win from your chair.

Fluking a hook

No, not if they do it once, but if like 3 times in a row, it would get old.

I always look if I am close to hooking someone, except my hooks are planned hooks. It would be fun though to add, 'Take that you scurvy swamp dog'...:D :D

It's funny this should come up. I've been playing golf a lot this summer because I felt burned out on pool. Just the other day I was playing golf with a friend who I also play a lot of pool with. It struck me that when he chipped in a crazy shot from 20 yards off the green how different the attitudes in the games are when it comes to luck. He is a 30+ handicapper, there is now way in hell even the most hardened gambler would have bet on him to put that ball in the cup or even come within 10 feet of it. When that ball dropped, we both knew it was the most insane amount of luck, yet that didn't stop us from screaming "YEAAAAAAAAAAAAA" as loud as we could and throwing high-fives all other the place.

Why is the attitude so different in pool. If I try an insane shot and it goes in clean, everyone gives me props and says nice shot. If it slightly kisses off a ball I clearly didn't intend to enter play, everyone just throws up their hands and says shit happens, INCLUDING MYSELF!!!

Why is that?

That's a good comparison!!

I think it depends on the attitude of the recipient of the good luck slop. Some may act like they meant it, some may act sorry, and then there's some who laugh and throw their hands up in fun and are obvious they didn't mean to do it [which lightens the mood sometimes :) ]

I would say because if you were shooting something and didn't intend to kiss off that other ball then you got lucky off of your poor play. On the other hand, if you called the kiss and made it you'd get a "Good shot" out of it because you made a good play. You surely wouldn't be doing high fives on the green if your friend was putting from 3 feet out, missed the cup on the edge and a gust of wind pushed it over enough to make it. Same thing if you ask me.

Now, if you attempt a 5 rail bank, which I would compare to a 30 foot chip, and you made it, you'd get the high fives. If you just smacked it and it went 5 rails you don't deserve it. At least with your friends bit of luck he was actually trying to do what he did and got a bit of lady luck to actually make it.

I couldn't have said it better. I think I would be slightly befuddled to have an opponent say " Excuse me, I just gave you a good snorken".:p
