Does music effect your play?

Ac/dc

for me there is nothing that gets me going like some old ac/dc(bon scott years) or led zeppelin, even old van halen. just something to make my blood flow really seems to make me play better. i keep thinking im gonna outgrow this kind of music and im so thankful that i haven,t yet lol( and im 41)

Ride on,for some reason really gets my pool game in gear along with a few other old rock songs.I personally prefer no music at all and a quiet murmur of people talking or just balls clicking together.Music, especially loud music or country has always been a problem for me.The longer I play pool though the more I find I am able to shut out the music and focus on the table.

Music affects my play both positively and negatively. it depends on what music is being played and how loud. it would be automatic to say that country music distracts me the most like I'm hearing voices in my head that says "you will not make this shot". second comes to mind, are those locally produced loud music whose singers can't even frickin sing. the latter always makes me utter aloud how crappy the music was and tell the pool staff to shut that fukcin music off.

some music makes me feel relaxed and others pumped up, namely disco music and RnB.

anyway, I have yet to hear an orchestral music and Kenny G. being played in the background. I just wonder how it will affect my game.

No problem when the music is at a reasonable level. As a former room owner it works like this -- someone wants the music turned up -- the bartender raises the level -- the people start getting louder -- someone wants the level higher -- its turned up a bit more -- people get even louder etc. My policy was go no higher than a certain level. There are the party'ers and the sane people -- or the players and the bangers. You can't please them all so I favored my repeat customers which was at a reasonable level.

I'm just wondering if music in your local pool hall effects your play. I know for a fact that it effects mine, both good and bad- depending on what's playing on the jukebox!

Even though I like music a lot, I would prefer no music at all when playing because I find the tempos and styles of differening songs can really change my pace.

If it adversely effects you, how do you cope? Earplugs? It's no wonder pool can be such a mentally exhausting game.

Music absolutely affects my game! Country, rock, oldies, (especially oldies) are great. Even classical, rap and reggae (sp?) would be "okay" for my game.

What ruins my game?
Silence totally ruins my game. The only music I can't handle at the pool hall is that screaming, cussing stuff they THINK is music. The boom and the screech makes my stomach upset and makes me feel angry. It is not music. It's really good for putting people in really bad moods, though. But, I guess a lot of people respond that way to stuff like that.

How do I deal with it? (Screaming screeching sounds that agitate me)
If it's normal for that pool hall, I go somewhere else. If it's due to temporary customers, I try to grin and bear it for just a bit, or until they leave. I've seen pool hall owners actually turn that stuff off and reset the jukebox after the people who played it leave (and once while they were still there). I've even seen one owner turn the jukebox off, once. If it causes customers to feel bad, or angry, it's not good for business. Period.

The older I get, the more I enjoy silence (I hope that doesn't give away my age:embarrassed2: ).

At the pool room, it depends on my mood and whether I am playing for fun or in a tournament. Sometimes the music helps relax me.

As for the type of music, I am pretty open minded as long as it is not heavy rap. I listen to everything from the Killers to George Strait:wink: .

Absolutely it gets me in the zone and fast.

I like I have read couldn't stand the music at the pool room. Then one day I figured it out for me. Pool is a game built upon consistency but the music being played was random one country, then a rap song then some rock. I am a very rhythmic shooter so one day years ago I took my Ipod and I created a playlist based on my speed(I shoot fast) and used a consistent back beat.So instead of distracting me it allows me to be more consistent. Here's the amazing thing it only helped my shooting I started picking better quality shots which were much harder and my level of play jumped to make those shots. I tweak that playlist all the time depending on what part of the game I'm practicing. The only problem now is that when I am shooting in a tournament or with somebody else I have a harder time creating that zone WITHOUT the music but I'm working on that. Another HUGE advantage I am now choosing the environment that I play in no longer do I have to listen to anything or ANYBODY that has the opportunity to interrupt my concentration is the MOST important thing when I am trying to improve my game. The only thing that interrupts me is food and drink going in or coming out It actually has been one of the most fascinating things to me -- how music can increase your level of play if you design what you are listen to around your game. It's much more involved that this IM me if you want to know more.

The owner of one of my local league bar/poolhalls is an older woman who likes to play the Dean Martin/Perry Como/Frank Sinatra genre of music. As talented as those singers are/were, I do not like to hear this kind of music while shooting pool.

And ANY kind of music can be played TOO LOUD!!!!

The other night in my 9-ball match, I seemed to catch a gear when the AC/DC song "Shoot to Thrill" came on (that's the name of our 9-ball team).

Maniac

Classic rock or country

I seem to play my best when a song from my youth plays. It brings good thoughts and allows me to play without over thinking each shot. I hate when the music is so loud that that you have to shout to hear your own thoughts. I can not stand rap "music". I have never understood why anyone would want to listen to that noise. All music has its place, I have never been to the place where it belongs.

Try Mp3

I have never missed a ball to Bob Sger's "Turn the Page."

I don't like to jump in when a thread has so many replies but this is a really interesting topic for me.

Many posters have said music at appropriate volumes or "good music" enhances or at least does not harm their game. I don't like the pool room music in general and play Turn The Page when kids are pumping dollars into the juke box for music I dislike.

My solution: I wear an MP3 player with my music on it. It is easy to ignore my own tunes when I am in a zone and concentrating. They entertain me when I am playing badly and need to stay positive, and they pick me up when I am tired and they overpower any sounds in the room. A digital music player helps me control my mental game by helping me control the distractions around me.

This isn't Aimes mister.

If there is loud bad rap or no-tune heavy metal on and im not playing like God, it just aggravates the crap outta me and all i can think about is how we are so doomed. If im playing great, not too much bothers me.

Meezer girl, I couldn't agree more. You said,
I want the music to be "white noise" so I can ignore everyone and everything going on around me.
One time I was playing APA, I was a 3 at the time, playing a guy who was a 6, (7, I believe is the highest) and I beat him down and dirty two games to nothing at the tune of 'Sad But True', Metallica. That was the night I became a Metallica fan.

We play on a 9 foot and the jukebox is right beside it. Multitude of speakers all over and usually cranked to the nuts with head banger crap.
It is a new Touch Tune box so for an extra credit you can choose to have your songs play first. I usually drop a 10 spot in and load her up with Flatt and Scruggs.

Wow, a lot of great replies. But it seems that loud music and rap are the biggest beefs with people.

Today I went to my local hall and got there as early as I could, which was around 1215. (they open at 11)

I was the only one in there at first, and there was no music. A couple came in about 20 minutes later and immediately lit up the jukebox (which I really don't mind), but for some reason when it played, it seemed to be on the highest level it can go. It must still be on the loud setting from Friday night or something.

Next time I'll have to remember to ask the bartender/manager to see if they can lower it, but I'll probably wind up just dealing with it; though I will have to admit no matter how much I try to tune it out, certain songs inspire me while others just make me play angry. :)

Put in 50 cents-Play a song you like an immediately tell the houseman it's a bit too loud- Make sure he knows you played it and that should take care of things for a while anyway.

Whats really bad is that some of these JBs blare random songs to 'prime the pump' So now you are even more aggravated listening to something awful that NOBODY wanted to hear.

I actually walked out of a pool room once when they wouldn't lower the volume. I came in early, hardly anyone else there, and I'm just practicing. The girl behind the bar cranked up the music and I asked twice (to someone else) if they could turn it down. The first time, she only turned it down a smidgen.... so because it was still too loud, I said something again. When she didn't turn it down, I turned in the balls and walked out. Yea, she didn't like me and was doing it deliberately.

Sadly most of the Bars, Rooms, and Sports Bar in the Valley of the Sun, have JUKE BOXES that seem to alway be playing.
