In the grand scheme of things, not such a big deal but....

when buying a custom cue, I don't want to feel any lip, transition, nothing, where the ferrule meets the shaft wood.

It should be as smooth as a baby's left butt cheek, imo.

Is that too much to ask?

It's been that way (seamless) with every production cue I've bought, so I'd expect at least the same with a custom cue.
 
Yes sir tips too no lip when they are replaced and a mirror finish in the sides.

I think the left one is too much...butt not the right one! (Purposely spelled incorrectly :) )

You are very much ok with your thoughts...it's all in the small details that makes me want to go back for another...and that's a small detail that is a BIG deal to me as well.
 
In the grand scheme - you are right, not that important. But I think it points to a lack of attention to detail, and details are why you buy a custom cue.... So what does that say about anything else involved in the cue?

Every new custom I've received had no lip between the ferrule and the shaft wood when new. Every custom cue I own now has a lip between the ferrule and the shaft wood, likely due to humidity changes (I live in the dry central prairies of Canada).

BTW, having messed around with a depth micrometer, please know that you can feel a difference of less than 0.001" with your finger tips quite easily.

It is usually baby bottom smooth when new, it will assuredly change unless you live in the same region as the maker.

They should be able to polish it up easily a year later and you should never see movement again.

They could also stabilize the piss out of the wood with Nelsonite or something but that has its own set of concerns.

If you receive one brand new with that lip, that's lame indeed.

+1. Not too much to ask for at all. IMHO it shouldn't even be mentioned to the maker. This nuance should already be a standard.
 
Heck yeah it's too much to ask for. Take what you get and be happy with it and no questions asked. And BTW.....no refunds.

I'm glad I got that off of my chest. What were you thinking making a request for perfection.

If that has to be discussed with the maker, you have the wrong maker. The reasons would be too long and boring to post here.

Was this cue purchased new,,,?

What kind of a cue maker would let that out of his shop? My guess is that it was used, and someone changed out the ferrule.:shrug: If it was new, I would send it back, even if it was a break cue.

The entire cue should be absolutely perfect. There should be nothing that can be criticized. The fit/finish should be a piece of artwork and show piece. Custom or production should be flawless. Are you asking too much...nope. You have a high standard. You're paying good money for a custom.

It's not just when I can feel a "lip" between the ferrule and the shaft that bothers me. When I'm purchasing a brand new custom, I don't want to even see glue lines between the ferrule and the shaft...and that's a common occurance for some makers.

Picky you say?

I say yep! It's my money I'm spending...

if you wanted it to be as smooth as the right cheek butt that wouldnt be asking for too much ... but as smooth as the left one thats asking for too much!!!!!!!!!:D
 
The ferrules should be the same as the assembled cue joint.......Seamless.........Smooth,.........Perfectly Round.......Completely Even
and anything less seems like a conspicuous flaw deserving loud mention.......because not disclosing it is just ingenuous & dishonest.

I would rather have a visible glue line than a ferrule/shaft that can be felt depending on the weather.
