Does this make me a real odd ball?

Am I the only odd ball like this? I'm strictly a league player, I don't gamble, I don't really know how to. I have found that although both have their bad elements the politics and reasonably mild bullshit of league play is far easier for me to deal with that the haggling over a few bucks and spots or weight and the assholes that money on the table can create.
I have found that when money is added into the game, the game can change quite a bit, and not always for the better. That being said, I like to watch other players play for money and further still, I really don't care for league play but it's kinda what I have. The lesser of two evils for me, if you will.
I have found that as much as I like to play, I like to play when I like to play and not really on someone else's schedule, and even more than that I don't really like to play other people. Sometimes when you play other people you have to sit and wait, or rack, or listen to witty banter, or listen to them b1tch or whine, then to be a good sport you have to shake their hand and be complementary when it's over and sometimes these are people you wouldn't let on your facebook page and wouldn't, under normal circumstances, touch with 10 foot pole or piss on if they were on fire. So no, I don't always wanna shake hands and I know they don't always want to shake my hand. And sometimes when you do shake, they're really pissed off so you get that threatening shake/stare and the hard tight hand shake like that asshole did in the second Karate Kid when he first met Daniel, and that sucks.
Instead of going through that I'd rather just play, sometimes for 10 or 15 minutes, sometime for several hours, and when I'm done I wanna stop.
Anyone else feel like that?

I know of a lot of people who only play league and never gamble. Having said that, sounds like you need a hug, or a beer. Dont take their comments/hand shakes so seriously. Just my opinion brother.

Not odd at all. I have the same varying degrees of your thoughts as well, it depends on my mood, (usually up beat), and who I come up against.

Most players, I enjoy playing and others, its a chore and I like to get it over with as soon as possible.

Over all, I enjoy league play. if I didn't like most of the players, I would stop playing.

A couple months back I played a female that I'd just beaten hill/hill in the most recent tri-annual tournament. During the match she took every opportunity to berate me/my play. Which I'm okay with. I don't do that to others, but I don't expect decency out of people and I accept that sportsmanship isn't too terribly common. I miscued on a break and my captain joked "That's not the first time he's done that." Of course she had to chime in with, "I'm not surprised." Anyway, I just shrugged and laughed it off all match and ended up winning 4-1. I shook her hand and walked away, and as I was walking away she said "NICE SHOOTING TO YOU TOO!" I didn't give her the satisfaction of any comment and she spent the rest of the night steaming and venting to anyone that would listen about how much of an asshole I am. Good times.

I don't think you are a "real odd ball". That being said, I'm the opposite of you. I love to match up and playing for fun with people I like or $/tournaments with whoever. Mostly I just enjoy playing the game and getting better. I love the fact that pool is a test of "me vs them". Not "us" vs "them" or anything else.

I played in one league session and was done after that. The politics and stuff just seemed too "high school" for a renegade/rebel like myself.

I'll put it this way, I'd rather get into an argument and stand up for myself over matching up/ a game than be expected to be there to coach my teammates or glad hand and schmooze the "cool kids" every Thursday.

I get what your saying..I play my best when I want to play..
I don't mind playing for a few dollars with people I know these
days..but I don't gamble. In other words if your a ( A ) player
you might get a race to five for five..thats just fun , not gambling.
When I rejoined a team , I made it clear that I was not going to be
there every week..because I really didn't want to play on demand.
but I ended up being there every week and ready to play..being on
a team is a commitment..I enjoy playing by myself more these days
probably because I'm getting better at running drills..

Have a nice holiday.

Had a similar experience in weekly tournament but it wasn't even close. I destroyed my female opponent who, without even a hand shake, went straight to the guy running the tournament and demanded that my handicap be raised. {what I had to give her, actually} It wasn't.
I just shrugged it off, happens all the time, to a lot of people who can't stand to lose.

You're not weird ; you're just comfortable in what you want. I don't like gambling either unless I know the person real well. I've seen way too many games end up bad because of gambling and I don't really need the money so I don't do it. I am not rich by any means but have enough to buy what I want to drink, pay for the tables etc and have a good time. Gambling kind of ruins that for me. I play league also. Most of the people in our leagues all know each other and its basically fun so I continue in league.

Everything mentioned is no problem compared to my early league days. 5 people on each team waiting all night to play on one table and everyone blowing smoke in your face. I quit after one session.
