Dominiak Cues?

I love mine....

I just bought one at the show, I wanted a pro taper, a new weight pin and a moori medium put on.....

I asked Bill about this he said, "I'll take it back taper the shaft for free and fix the weight, and the moori will be 20$"....

He did as promised, you can't beat his prices or his customer service... it's a great cue and worth every penny!

What kind of taper does it come with? The web site just says "CNC machined to our Custom Protaper profile."

standard 13mm "extra thick" for a stiff hit... the taper on his cues are fit to benefit a newer player, not much freedom to spin or play with the cue at all, doesn't allow for action... but he will custom the shaft to what you ask him... he did for me

So you just wanted a smaller diameter? I was just curious because I have a Viking cue that has a 13mm "pro taper" -- it would probably be the same then?

yes, i wanted a 12mm shaft instead

I really would not describe the hit of my cue (curly maple) as stiff. I would say that it is very solid. I have a "Players" cue with a lepro tip that hits considerably stiffer than this cue. I have the 13mm shaft. I wil lsay that the taper is thicker. He did take the taper back for me at no charge when I sent an e-mail saying I felt it was too thick. He was really great to deal with. The cue was as I stated before very elegantly simple (which I love), and it hits very well. For $99 shipped you would be crazy not to buy one!! One of these days I would love to try his sweet 16 cue. Radial laminated shaft with top grade wood for $250. you really can't beat that. Especially since I know I like his work.

I mentioned in another thread that I received my "Kandycurly" on Monday. 19oz with 12.75mm tip & no wrap. I love it, it feels very nice when playing. I had a lot of comments about it at my league game on Wednesday night.

I posted a pic in the Cue Gallery but the photo really doesn't do it justice.

It's nice to hear that the quality of his cues is good, because I was VERY unhappy with one of his 'CueMidor' cases he made.

As most who know me know, I very rarely make a disparaging remark, but years ago I purchased one of these cases from him direct. It took forever for me to receive the case, as he was apparently waiting for good, stable maple stock. I was cool with that. However, when I did finally receive the case, it had a rather large ding in the top, radiating from the outer edge in, which had actually broken the finish and had gone into the wood. Again, I figured, well, it'll likely pick up some dings anyway...so I did not complain.

After my league season ended, (which was a few weeks after receiving the case), I put the cue and case up in a climate controlled room for a couple of weeks. I grabbed the case up to go to play one evening, and for the life of me, could not get the case to open at all!! The maple had warped so badly, that I had to use a screwdriver to pry it open to get my cue out! I tried to access their website, but it was gone or unavailable, so I had no contact info anymore. Wound up just sticking the case in a corner in my game room and have not used it since...it is so badly warped, that it will never work as it should again...still debating on whether it will become firewood or not. I would have to say it was, by far, my most disappointing pool-related purchase EVER.

I've got a couple of William's WD1020 cues on order... both curly maple with mahogony-colored joint/butt caps and w/o wraps... a 60"-er with two shafts (12.6 mm)... and a 58"-er with one shaft (12.75mm). Both at 19 oz... and an additional wt. bolt for the 60"-er to get down to 18.5 oz. Total price for the order... $271.

Should have them in ~2 weeks... I'll post how they look/hit.

$$$

the biggest reason the cues are so reasonably priced is that they cut the wood them selves as that is how they started out. selling wood to custom cue makers and then progressed into cue making.

im supposed to get my curly maple with dominator shaft tomorrow i cant wait to try it out, feels like christmas. ill try to post pics, and feedback on the cue once i get it..if you all want of course

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I am really getting close to purchasing another cue.

I currently have a Pechauer JP-07 that is about 3 years old (19 oz, 12.75" tip, natural maple, stock tip). The shaft is pretty dinged up and needs to be refinished, but a new shaft is going to run me around $120.

I really like the understated elegance of the Dominiak cues and can get a complete custom cue with two shafts for $160.

Since I don't have the opportunity to shoot with the Dominiak before purchasing one, can someone try to compare and contrast it with a Pechauer or similar cue (hit, finish, shaft taper, etc).

Also, while searching the web I found some of the Dominiak cues being sold through www.billiardwarehouse.com, so are these actually production cues and not truly custom?

Thank you much,
Pete

p.s I lurk here often but rarely have much helpful information to add to posts, but will post my thoughts when they are relevant.

Wm Dominiak Cues

U have read all the posts about Dominiak Qs. I have 4 of them. Simply put, they are the best Q for your money that u will find. Period. They could b sold at twice the price and still b a great Q. He is the buyer of wood. He has his own lumber mill. He cures the wood. He chooses the best wood and makes a great Q. Then he sells his remaining wood to other Q makers. Sure he can make a better, cheaper Q than most other folks. If Bill has a problem, it's haveing his fingers in too many pieces of the pie. He is a very busy person.

I was speaking with Bill at Valley Forge this year and he told me he has a lumber cutter bringing him virgin old hard rock maple. It is top quality. He showed me some shafts and the grain is tighter than the hair on a dog's back. He simply has acess to wood that is top quality. Besides, he is a really great person and takes pride in his work. The quality of his Qs far exceeds the $ he charges as compared to many others.

I highly recommend Bill Dominiak Qs. And, no, I don't own stock in his company, :( but I wish I did. ;)

Got my nice curly maple from Bill in about 7 weeks from date ordered, quality wood and craftmanship with black joint black wrap black butt cap, sweet looking cue ,wood to wood joint, he makes the shaft standard 12.75 but I wanted 13mm which was no problem with him , I like a stiff hit and low deflection, which this cue has, he uses non-pro taper, which I like. But if you like pro taper all you got to do is ask if you place the order by phone. I got it about 3 weeks ago and am just now starting to get dialed in with it , and I am loving it.

I think billiardwarehouse may have seen his cues at Valley Forge as he had a booth there , and ordered some to sell , I noticed they marked the cues up from what Bill is charging on his website.

I was going to ask what the wait time was. Is 7 weeks about the average wait?

Mine took one week to arrive. That was for a Kandycurly, 19oz, 12.75mm tip (turned down from 13mm) with no wrap. Pretty fast service if you ask me, and Bill is a really nice guy to talk to & discuss what you want.

I ordered a 1020 with wrap today 19 oz turned down to 12.75 and Bill said the lead time was running about 2 weeks right now.

Pretty quick I think.
