The 2nd clue was the content of the "story".

Although pocket billiards has struggled for years, it was obvious from everyone that we dealt with that the movers and shakers in the billiards world were most interested in the health of the game instead of their own bottom line. Even competitors in the billiards world regularly put their own competition aside and make decisions that are for the betterment of the sport."
The final line about Mackey was just the icing on the April fools cake.

And of course there is also the statement about the 5 year lease on the new offices in the Sahara Hotel - which is closing its doors on May 14.
That actually lends credibility to the statement that they signed a 5 year lease.
