Double Black Phenolic Problems

Hi,

Is anyone having problems with recent batches of Double Black Phenolic.

I just bought a few hundred bucks of it and I am having problems after my final sanding with 320 grit. I am seeing streaks that are the cloth material. It looks like a bear took is nails and slashed it and after I sand, it is less pronounced but still there and very annoying.

I can't seal and finish this because it looks bad under the clear. My machines are running on time. For the time being I have been applying a little ebony stain to fix the problem but I was getting perfect black collars and butt caps without any fixing or touch up for years. I just finished 3 cues with mahogany phenolic and they finished perfect.

I think I got a bad batch because the tubes look very blotchy and uneven relative to the linen grain. Any one who has any thoughts, I would appreciate any input.

I have seen some of the blotchy looking black linen and it looked bad with fast drying finishes like super glue, but turned out nice and black when sealed with slow drying epoxy. Something about it staying wet longer made it look better. I am not sure if that will help with the material you got or not.

I totally agree. I noted that years ago. When using phenolic you needed to be sure that all the pieces come off of the same tube as the super glue is to clear and would show the different shades. Epoxy always made them all blend and you couldn't see the different shades. I used to use super glue as a sealer on shafts on repair work when I was in a hurry as it was quick but after the finish was put on I could still discern different shades of black.

Could add some lamblack (soot) to some thinned epoxy.
I had success with that on knife handle materials such as canvas and linen Micarta and on black G10.
Getting it to penetrate the coarse fibers sometimes took judicious use of a heatgun.

If you can't send it back try coloring it while spinning with a good quality black permanent marker with a large wide tip. Then let it dry for a few minutes and you can apply your clear, I have done this in the past and it worked very well.

Black phenolic

I use Stewart-McDonald's finger board dye (see below). It is "dead" black
and can also be used to "dress-up" a black G-10 pin.

I live very close to Atlas Billiards Supply and just got back from there where I met with John and Eric about the Double Black Problem. I had purchased these tubes back in April and they told me that they had had a problem with a batch and had pulled everything from stock.

They replaced the bad material and where fantastic to deal with. Since I bought the stuff in April and did not start using it until this last week they had no way of know what batch I received in April and could not make notification.

Atlas is a great company to do business with and they where forthright in solving my problem.

Thanks to all who have offered help here, I appreciate all input.

That is great news, I have been doing buisness with them for 8 years now and to date I have had the same results, they are certainly great people to deal with.

Glad things worked out.
