Some people think the cue ball goes forward because it jumps over the object ball. As shown above, the cue ball on such a jump forward shot has to go pretty high into the air if the cue ball is so close to the object ball and to go that far forward. Instead, the cue ball has no visible jump.
One way to demonstrate that to people who don't understand the shot is to have them shoot it with the same elevation but start back farther, like a ball diameter. Move the balls progressively closer together. At some small separation, there will be a major change in the action due to the foul.
