Doug Patrick - New Cue Review

I agree with you. Doug is a great guy. I have gotten to know him over the past couple of years. I have been playing with one of his cues for the past couple of years. I agree that they play great. I like the taper and he uses morri tips. He does make his cues with a smaller butt diameter than what is traditional. He has some nice point work and does most cues with veneers. He has started using the radial pin and they play even better. I know the cue that you have and I thing it is very good looking. The mother of pearl looks good and he said he will be making more cues using it. If you want a great cue and not break the bank, call him and he can build you want to fit your tastes. Hunter

K I just wanted to say, I think I might Have to look into one.
BTW: K, I like the face Fuzz, Makes you look a bit Bolder, More Defined. Looks Good.

I also recently got a beautiful cue (Cocobola w/ivory points!--ivory joint with radial pin) from Doug Patrick and am really impressed with how well it plays. Doug knows his stuff and I would recommend him highly.

Thank you again for the great review. I love custom cue building! Probably more than I love to play.

Thanks John for the good post on that cocobola and Ivory Cue.
Check my website to see that cue K. Its on the one of a kind page.http://www.patrickcustomcues.com

Thanks Doug!

As some of you may or may not know, Doug has been a major influence in my cue building. Doug and I ran into each other a couple of years back, just as I was taking an interest in building cues and as he was starting to build cues again. I didn't have a lot of equipment and Doug didn't have a website. He let me work with him and helped me in my less knowledgeable areas of cue building. Doug has a lot of knowledge stored in his head and hands and it shows if you look and play with one of his cues. He has used the 5/16-14 and is now offering the radial pin in his cues. I'll be honest, his cues do hit better than nearly all of the cues I've ever hit with and own and has the best finish work that I have ever seen on a cue. Doug builds his cues one at a time in his shop and doesn't rush the process. When you get a Patrick Custom Cue, you're getting a quality cue for less than most cue makers charge.

I'm not in Doug's shop much since I've opened my own shop, even though I still pick his brain now and then. I'm doing my best to build a solid, good looking cue and with Doug's help, each cue just gets better and better! I couldn't give Doug a review without plugging my own cues, Zimmerman Custom cues. After all Doug did teach me a lot!

I've attached photos of one of Doug's cues that I have for sale also! His cue is the one in the middle with curly maple and ebony!

I highly recommend a Patrick Custom Cue (and a Zimmerman Custom Cue) to anyone in the market for a solid, well built cue for a great price from someone who loves to build cues!

Thanks Doug!

For those of you that don't know and do know Mike Zimmerman you also know that his ability to build a cue has greatly improved. Mike and I ran into each other a couple years ago. If my memory serves me right we met some 8 years ago. He was just getting into building cues and was and still is very eager to learn more about it! A great cue builder (Andy Gilbert) helped me back in 1995. I asked how could I repay him for his knowledge he sharded with me. He told me just return the favor when you are asked. So now Mike, when the time comes you return the favor! But wait until your in Florida!!!! HAHA!! He knows what I mean. Mike builds a very good cue also and like the rest of us custom builders he is always willing to learn something new. So in closing I would like to thank Andy Gilbert for being such a great guy and helping me! Also I would like to thank Mike for getting me onto the web! Thanks Mike!!

Bump for a very nice looking and bargain priced cue.
i like your designs a lot and your prices are very good.
Greetings , David.

where you describe the cues joint......you screw it down and as it hits the pilot it gets alot tighter, thats exactly how my schon is (early 90s model). Im convinced thats why my cue plays so good, lots of feedback and an awesome hit. Oddly enough ive talked to several cuemakers about this aspect of the joint (i believe its called an "interference fit"), and they have all told me it has nothing to due with the way the cue hits or plays. Its odd though when you look at some of the cuemakers like layani and schuler who specialize in the joint.....and even starkey who uses that huge wooden pin, im convinced theres more to the joint than just "it holds the cue together and thats it" (which is what ive heard several times).

This joint style is known as a compression fit joint used by
Gus and Tony, read this

yeah ive heard it called a compression too.......whatever it is i like it :)

hey klopek its funny you said tuning fork, thats how i usually describe my cue too.....you can bounce it on the floor and the shaft vibrates at a really high speed just like a fork.
Ive had several aftermarket shafts made for my schon and ask for the same type of fit, the makers will say no problem but then when i get it, its never a true compression fit like i have on the original shafts :(.
