Sorry, but I have decided to boycott all Dragon Promotions events. IMO, they are using strong-arm tactics to undermine what is in the best interests of the sport.

Boycotting the tournament is just a waste of energy. Besides the players didn't do anything wrong and by not going you will miss out on playing for $20,000 or watching a lot of good players.

I will not be going simply because I don't feel like making the drive. I get my fill of watching some pretty good pros play in Spring Hill and Tampa. And now I find that I really enljoy playing more than watching.

Mike, Willz21 hit the nail on the head. Some of the best players in the world will attend the UPA-sanctioned event in Jacksonville, Florida.

The rest of them will not attend UPA events because, truth be told, it has become a reality in today's pool world that most players are not willing to spend the monies to attend a 4-to-5-day tournament (May 25 through 29, 2005) that, in reality, could have transpired in 2 days or less.

Of course, if you're living in Florida near Jacksonville, you're a lucky duck and don't have to incur the expenses related to attending UPA-sanctioned tournaments. Dragon Productions is to be commended for stepping up to the plate and providing a playing field for the UPA selected group of players.

May the best seeded player win! Looking forward to reading all about it!

Jam,

I believe that that is one of the major problems with professional pool. They drag out tournaments for 3 or 4 days when they should have been completed in 2. How many people want to, or can afford to, lose 4 days out of their lives, to watch pool?

The amatuers who play in Kingsbay can complete a tournament with 75-80 players in one day. Why can't the pros with 40 - 64 players finish in one day?

it gets old very fast to see open tables and matches not being called just to stretch out the length of the tournament.

JAM, I always like your well thought and written posts and I'm not judging you in any way. But your statements above indicate that you are ok with the manner in which the UPA conducts their business. Is that true? Are the apparent strong-arm tactics against other tours and tournaments and non-payment guarantee reneging OK? Or, are they exagerated in your opinion? Thanks.

ScottR, I love your avatar! I don't know why, but it tickles my funny bone! :D

After receiving several PM's, I am glad to take this opportunity to clarify my opinion, FWIW! This is only MY opinion that I am expressing and not that of any other professional player.

I think folks should contact the BCA in reference to the unfair practices of the UPA. The BCA is the organization who gave the UPA their sanctioning authority, and they gave it to an organization with no track record whatsoever.

The early days of the UPA are gone, and it is now water under the bridge, but the organization did exhibit discriminatory practices (IMO), and it most definitely affected me and mine on the tournament trail. Fortunately, the UPA with its 6-tournament tour ain't the only fish in the sea when it comes to playing pool.

I am hopeful that the NUTS will be successful this coming year, and I believe this is the organization that will help to elevate pool as a sport. Regional tours are working together for the common good of all players: amateurs, aspiring players, professional veterans, and social shooters. This is what the UPA should be doing, working together with other organizations in the industry.

If you want to make a change for the better, then stop talking and start writing to the BCA. If enough people voice their concern about the current state of affairs, the BCA is the organization, at least at this time, who can correct the continuing problem of the UPA's strong-arm tactics and discrimination.

The reason you don't hear the lady pros upset is because the WPBA conducts itself in a professional manner and looks out for the rights of its member players. The UPA continues along its merry way and looks out for the rights of a select group of players.

Recently, a new president was elected to the BCA, Greg Hovey of Olhausen Billiards. Maybe it's time he gets wind of how the majority of the pool-playing public feels about the current governing body of men's professional pool. The BCA is the organization that can make things happen. Writing posts on AzBilliards Discussion Forum is only a form of venting, negative and/or positive. Contact the BCA, I say, and maybe they will effect a change FOR THE BETTER.

JMHO, FWIW!

Jam,

You are correct that the best players in the world will be in attendance. But even if the event were across the street from where I live, I wouldn't attend. It's sad that I would miss seeing the best players in the world. But I feel that the UPA has used strong-arm tactics to promote itself, and I will not attend any event that they sanction.

I hear ya', Mike, and I admire you for standing up for what you think is right and not supporting what is wrong as it pertains to men's professional pool.

FWIW, not all of the BEST players in the world will be in attendance in Jacksonville. It will be the BEST players in the world who ride the UPA train for free and the ones who can afford to attend a 5-day tournament that could be held in 2 days or less.

The BEST players will, and do, attend the Orlando Open, Glass City Open, Derby City Classic, U.S. Open, Carolinas Open, regional tours, and every single one of Allen Hopkins Productions' events, just to name a few.

I am hopeful that a change will be effected to remedy the problems relating to the men's governing body of professional pool in the near future.

Looking forward to seeing you, Mike, on the tournament trail. I'm not going to Jacksonville either!

I'm just simply reiterating that Shawn Putnam (Youngstown, OH) is the #1 ranked player in the USA. I think it's highly disrespectful to Mr. Putnam not to acknowledge that.

According to the UPA website, the calendar ranking for UPA Touring Pros is this: http://upatour.org/calendar.asp

Shawn Putnam of Youngstown, Ohio is ranked Number One! :)

Then there is a seeding ranking for UPA Touring Pros which has Shawn in the top 10, with Johnny Archer in the number-one spot.

The website states that these rankings have been updated as of March 28, 2005.

The list of Touring Pros on the UPA website has not been updated:
http://upatour.org/touring_pros.asp

There are MANY names on that list who are NOT members of the UPA! Some of the players listed have not attended a pool tournament in over a year. It has been rumored that Rafael Martinez passed, may he rest in peace. There are other players' names listed who did not renew their UPA membership well over a year ago, but yet their name still remains on the list of UPA Touring Pros.

i'd also like to add that the list of touring pro's on the UPA site IMO is almost disrespectful.

by that i mean, that you SHOULD NOT just be allowed to pay 100 and get a touring pro card. to me, that is disrespectful to the people that have dedicated their life to playing pool.

i recognized quite a few names on there of players that aren't even A players, let alone open/pro players. to me, that is bullshit.

its not the players fault themselves, its the UPA that allows this, instead of instituting a qualifying system.

this is one of the MANY reasons why i hope the NUTS succeeds, and either the UPA gets on board, or the NUTS busts the UPA.

is there any other "professional" sport where some hack can just walk up and play in the professional league??? i know that to some people, this is a plus, that they can play top notch players just about anytime they want.........but for the bigger picture IMO this is just another reason why the sport/game is still in a primitive state compared to other sport/games.

has anyone asked the UPA about this? i'll be emailing them and the BCA about it, but i doubt i will get a reply.

thanks

VAP
