Dream cue

Gus Blanks ,Barry Blanks

who can tell the difference
or is there any difference

If anything i would bet Barry may have improved just as Gus would have improved had he
lived another25 years or so

they are both the gold standard

I would have thought the same. But over the time I owned one of Gus’ cues, I was surprised how often it drew attention from other players in the pool rooms. Even people who know nothing about high end cues would slowly take notice and comment how nice the cue looked. Three times, people tried to take the cue from my hand, once successfully. It got to where I could not take the cue to a pool room where I did not know everybody there. One time in my local pool room, a friend walked over to my table and said that I could never hide the cue because from across the room he could tell it was a Szamboti.

I saw your cue when it was posted recently and was impressed as I am with all of the Szambotis’ work. Of course, I enjoy seeing Gus’ inlay work, particularly peacocks, arrowheads, and propellers. For any cuemaker, I don’t like dots or arrowheads at the end of points. After the trouble a cuemaker takes to perfect their points, I don’t want anything to distract from the effort.

I have seen inlayed cues on the same base as my Gus (not mine any longer). They are incredibly beautiful. But even though I like them, I would not have anybody, including Barry, do inlay work on an existing cue. For the same reason, I would not have him inlay a NOS unturned blank from Gus. I would let its beauty to stand on its own.

No matter what you put at the tip of a point you can still tell if the points are even. Putting dots or spears is NOT going to hide uneven points - I think this is one of the most incorrect statements people make about points.
I know thats not what you said, but I've heard it a thousand times and felt like commenting on it.

I had a cue made ~15 years ago by a well known maker who when it was nearly ready called me to ask if it was alright to put inlays at the tip of the points. When I asked why, he informed me that on the final pass a sugar streak appeared at the tip of one of the points that made the forearm look cracked so he wanted to "hide" that and also if I preferred to wait for a new build. To his credit he refused to charge me more for the extra inlays and the cue came out looking great anyways

With the first Gus blank I would have Barry make me a loaded cue and with the second, Pete Tascarela make a specially designed Bushka style cue using whatever original George materials he had or I could find.

Agreed.

Question, is the implication that a Gus blank is superior to any current cue makers or is the stipulation more for historical purposes?

I think it has to do with both. Gus was a perfectionist of sorts. His blanks were so far and above in quality to his peers at the time and today would still be considered among the best quality. Add to that, his work is the most desirable amongst top collectors and thats addresses the historical purpose.

I will have Marcus Deinst of Arthur Cues build the following:

WRAPLESS
Black palm into curly maple 4-point w/ medium sized notched diamonds in the heart of each point.
Veneers: Black paper binding the sandwich of veneers: Green / Natural / Blue / Orange
Phenolic butt-cap in black with a Hoppe Ring - bumperlessnesses
PILOTED 3/8x10 Pin with 4 shafts - 2x Arthur 13mm 1xPredator Z-2 and 1xMcDermott I-3 all with matching white phenolic collars - no rings.

The joint would be while phenolic or some equivalent and the ferrules of the Arthur Shafts would be Saber-T's

The only ring work would be at C and F - simple SW style or TAD tiny blocks would be nice as well.
and maybe a scrimshaw of Lemmy Kilmister in his Calvary hat with the words "I did it.... whatever I did!"

That is all, carry on.

If, I could have my "dream cue" built, it would be built by Bob Dzuricky. Bob's work speaks for itself, and he also happens to be one helluva of a great guy. :) I would probably throw a Mike Webb in there for good measure. ;)

I have this dream where i win the powerball, lol.

Id take 1 million, drop it at a certain cuemakers house & tell him i need enough brazilion rosewood for 10 cues. Then id tell him i want 3 cues made by him with BR and to start getting to work on them.

Then i would take the wood i just purchased & visit 10 other cuemakers of my choice around the country & stop by their shops & drop off the wood & 200k each & tell them the stipulation would be that they have to start right away on my cue regardless of their current wait time.

I know its crazy but i would try it if i won that type of money.

I already have my dream cue...

No such thing for me, there will always be a new different veneer and wood combo that'll stunn me,

I love points, recuts, veneer and full splices, and crazy figure in the wood, no one cue will ever be the one and only for me

4P4V 5/16x14 piloted stainless with plain ebony butt sleeve & leather wrap with Tascarella doing the work. Old school farm truck cue.

The gus blank is used cause of history and Searing has never built a cue with a gus blank so it/they would be super rare. I don't think ANYBODY builds a better blank than Searing.

Thanks guys. Of the classics, I definitely like Gus' point geometry the best but I'll probably never be able to afford one. Maybe one of these days I will be able to get a nice plain four pointer with a leather wrap. Maybe a few peacocks to round things out (I can't help that I have expensive tastes). As far as dream cues, I'll be coming up on Hercek's list in a few years so I'll have to come up with something special and save some pennies for that one.
