Driving Me Bonkers

I finally figured out why women tend not to be as good as men in pool.

Damn men won't leave us alone long enough to do drills or practice shots. Plus 'Free Advice' really just pisses you off and thereby sharks you.

So to all the men on here, leave us alone!

No, we do not want to play with you when we are doing drills.
No, we do not want you to tell us why we missed the ball when you can't seem to figure out why you miss 4 balls in a rack.
No, we do not want you to keep insisting on playing us a game or giving us pointers when we tell you to go away.
No, we do not want you to sit down and stare at us while we are playing a game or doing drills.
No, we do not want you to walk up to the table while we are playing the ghost and attempt to engage us in conversation.

So shoo!

I have to say this. One to One, men vs. women. Women have the nicest, smoothest, more beautiful stroke.

My thoughts exactly - Debbie we need to see a pic before commenting further.
I believe I met you watchez. I think you were sitting next to me in Cape Girardo when Bobby Hunter and Andy Quinn were playing a match. If it was you, we briefly discussed cues.

LMAO!!!!

Well you know Debbie, we don't really want to do all those things either. What we're really trying to ask is, "I don't really care how you play pool, but wanna come back to my place?"

It's the same here on the forums...the girls are never ignored.

Debbie, ask yourself this question.....

Would you rather guys see you playing alone & try to come up with an excuse to play with you or would you rather have guys see you playing alone & try to get as far away as possible?

You got it! The post was a comedic release to my weekend annoyances. I know how it works. It’s the same in the pool room as well as outside the pool room. It just happens to be more prevalent and less smooth in the pool room. When there is a 1 in 30 ratio of girls to guys, well they have limited options at that point. When a guy introduces himself as your future ex-husband, well his intentions are not well disguised.

I don’t mind the jerks; I am perfectly comfortable telling them what is what. It is the persistent nice guys that are the hardest. I don’t like being rude to them, since I know they either have innocent intentions of killing the time or are sincerely trying.

This weekend was just annoying, since I had my heart set on practicing a couple shots and working on my draw. I told one guy and he was good enough to walk away. This other guy kept asking after I told him three times I just wanted to practice some things. He was being very nice and innocent, so I caved. The whole time he kept trying to give me tips. I explained to him that I have taken lessons with very good instructors, such as Mark Wilson and Bobby Hunter and then he tells me that he has given lessons in the past. I had a hard time with this one, since he kept hooking himself ball after ball. After a few games, I politely excused myself, then he came right back after a few minutes. A few racks later, I finally ‘manned up’ and told him I needed some alone time with my table.

So that is the variety I need to figure out…

Deb, a couple of comments:

1. It's not that long a drive.

2. As I've told you and Zarah and Ruth over and over again, pool is for boys.

3. Finally, knowing firsthand that you can shrivel a playa's drivel with a "back to your sandbox" glance, I'm not too concerned about you.

Why not embrace the attention? Let the suckers come to you then fleece'em. Just be careful and carry some douche bag repellent, A.K.A. mace.

Ok, now I know who Debbie is. Forgive me for not hitting on you and asking your name  She is a nice looking woman. I think I also noticed you on the US Open stream in the audience during the finals.

Debbie can play, I saw her hit a few balls during the tournament.

I don't think there is anyway you are going to stop guys from trying to give you advice.

Andy and I would love to take a trip up to Chicago. If you talk to Bobby, see if he would like to play Andy on some Saturday or Sunday afternoon/evening. I have seen Bobby gamble a few times lately and he is a perfect gentleman at the table.

You are more than forgiven :)

Yes, I got to go to the US Open in style (VIP seating). It was quite a blast. Some very good pool watching, and lots of late night pool playing. I came back exhausted!

I will ask Bobby tonight. He is going to work on kill/drag draw shots with me tonight (can you tell I'm excited!).

Pat, I adore you. I would never "shrivel ya drivel"! The firsthand reference must have been you bearing witness and not as the receipent!

It just might help your game if you listen a little and worry less about the "boys" who want to help you. I only wish someone told me a few things I was doing wrong many years ago before they became bad habits that took me quite a few years to get rid of. I saw you at Red Shoes and saw a few guys giving you advice and I was one of them. (I made one comment and then quickly walked away. It was after you missed the same shot again and you were setting the balls back up so it certainly did not interfer with your practice session)

I do the same with guys too when I see such a glaring mechanical flaw that would improve their game. I want eveyone to get better because the more you like pool the more you will stay at it and bring new people into this great sport. I'm a former BCA instructor at CUE-U in Rockford, but you brushed it off. Before me the other "intruder" was Freddy the Beard, pool hustler, Banks Hall of Famer, author and ACCU-Stats commentator, and you brushed him off.

I know that a weekend at CUE-U still costs about $700 but Freddy's advice was probably priceless. I'm not even going to pretend I have half his knowledge. How many woman or for that matter guys, get Freddys' advice without spending the money for his books or DVD's. You would have gotten it for free with a smile and sincere Wow, that is great, thanks lot I appreicate it !!

I"m glad to see you are playing with the Ghost, now just listen and learn from him. It's not the mistakes that make us poor players but failure to learn from those mistakes. I will NOT ever approach your table again, but if you ever have a question, I will answer it anytime. Take care !!!

Are you no longer a BCA Instructor? That's sad, what happened? SPF=randyg

Do you play in high heels and pasties ?:grin-square:

I think all good looking Ladies should play in high heels and pasties..

Just my opinion:wink:

Still in the Game

Randy, yes, I'm still a BCA instructor, just don't work at CUE-U. It was great working with Bob and Linda for several years, but it took my whole weekend away so now I prefer to give lessons in my basement pool hall. I call it that because I modeled it after my fathers pool room, North Shore Billiard Club that was in Chicago around 30 years ago. Complete with mustard paint and pay phone !! I have to remember to pay my BCA dues this month !!

It was nice meeting you yesterday. I was working on my pre-shot routine specifically my timing. Freddy gave me the perfect advice and I thanked him. I am sorry it seemed to you that I brushed him off. He perfectly explained to me why my stops between strokes were so bad. Bobby Hunter and Mark Wilson have both warned about this before, but for some reason when Freddy explained it, it really clicked. That advice showed to me how good of an instructor he must be and I plan on trying to arrange a lesson in the near future.

My complaint is this. I was working on my stroke yesterday trying to achieve some rythm, which requires feeling it. You need to hit a lot of balls very concentrated to obtain the proper place mentally. This requires keeping focus in between setting balls up. Making the ball was not the tough thing. Making it with the type of stroke I was trying to use was very difficult. If I was just trying to pocket the ball, it would have went in much more often. I was trying to use a kill type (drag draw) stroke.

Your advice to use a shorter bridge as I told you is something I hear quite often. But I have chosen to use a shorter stroke and keep my bridge length the same. At least for now.

While your intentions were fine. I must have been interupted 10+ times yesterday. It was nearly impossible to work on my game. It ranged from helpful tips to some creepy guy asking if I had a boyfriend and what my sign was.

I am happy paying for lessons. I am also very lucky to know some very good players who give me good advice. But lessons alone do not make a person a better player. As Mark Wilson once told me, you need to be able to teach yourself. This requires time to concentrate on my stroke.

Fair Enough. I still did pretty good. You played next to me for at least 4 or 5 hours before I finally approached you and I only commented for less than 5 or 6 seconds and at least I never asked if you had a boyfriend !!

You have a good stroke and sounds like great teachers. But I can't think of one good reason, or think of anyone on the planet that would tell you to chose to have your bridge hand so far away from the cue ball (at least 16 inches by my best guess) Then only draw your cue half way back. Your accuracy will increase tremendously with the shorter bridge. Your stroke will be more stable and less sideway movement on the cue. I'm not going to pester you because you will change one day, trust me, and when you do, I'm going to stop by to say what a great stroke you have and then ask if you have a boyfriend, LOL.

We all get unsolicited advise from well intentioned players now and then. Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's bad. Sometimes people don't understand what we're working on. I'm older so it doesn't bother me unless they hang around yapping for the next half hour. I just politely point out I need to get back to my practice.
During a match just the other day after my partner lost his game one of our opponents explained killing your soldiers to me. Never heard of it before. I thanked him.
I guess my point is if someone offers advice and you don't want or need it just tell them your interrupting my practice; I have a coach thank you very much.
