I read the article about the surge in popularity of pool in this region which has given rise to these new tournaments. Can anyone shed some light on who is banking rolling these tournaments. Is it rich oil barons? Royalty? or is it corporate? Just curious.....

There was a good article about this in Billiards Digest awhile back. Basically, pool is going to be part of their school curiculum and is funded by the state, tables, instructors, etc. The author (Mike Shamos I think) traveled there and was very impressed. They're attracting foreign players as instructors and house pros. If they keep up with it don't be surprised if the next generation of great pros has some from these middle eastern states. I don't know, however, how the recent economic crisis over there effected their fledgling pool world.

I love BD, highly recommend subscribing to it.

There have been many contributors to the growth of the game in the Middle East but it's success can be tracked back to just ONE man. His name is AHMED IBRAHIM and it was his vision of ten years ago that sent the Arab bandwagon in motion.
He is a proud Fujairan and he persuaded Sheik Saleh Al Sharqi the ruler of this Emirate to underwrite the first major tournament in the region .
There was no prize money – success was rewarded in GOLD BULLION.
It was a 16 man field
Eight local players plus eight World stars that I had the privilege of selecting.
Alex Lely won a kilo of gold beating Johnny Archer in the final. I will give you the full lowdown later today.

Wow...how much was the gold he won worth, out of curiosity?
