I understand that veneers are sycamore dyed all the way thru. But is there a way to prevent veneer colors from fading? I've seen pic of cues that are at least 10 years old and the veneers have faded.

Someone mentioned using hard woods. But what if i wanted to see a color like red/blue/orange.

Is there a way to make sure these veneers don't fade too much?

Build with high quality veneers. Also, cues finished with automotive clear coat or UV finishes are not likely to have fading veneers.

Fading

You say you saw pictures of 10 year old cues. Did you see them when they were new? If not, how do you know they were faded? Just curious.

The high quality veeners in the first place part is spot on.

FWIW - I have and/or still see occasionally, cues I built nearly
20 years ago that are just as intense color as when new.
They were finished with Lacquer - back when we thought it
made sense to finish wood with wood lacquer - and no, they
didn't yellow, thank you very much.

As mentioned before - some veeners have more subtle colors than
others. So not bright may not indicate faded.

???????????

Veneers are like anything else you get what you pay for. Some cuemakers use natural woods which won't be exceptionally bright as a general rule. Jazzpool that replied in your post sells veneers that many of the cuemakers on AZB use an are very happy with an this is a tough bunch to please!!!!!!!!!!!

veneers fading..

the veneers i saw was from pictures of a few different Southwest cues.

I've seen pictures of new cues coming out of the shop and the color are a lot more vibrant than the current photos of cues that were from 92-94.

To clarify proficient billiards has photos of refinished sw..a ebony and blue veneer cue. Turned out beautiful but the veneers seem to be faded compared to other pics of peoples new sw cues.

I can only assume that they have been using the same veneer supplier since then. But my main concern is not specifically with that cue maker. More just to try to choose a color that is quite brilliant that won't fade. Otherwise i'd have to pick a veneer that is not as bright.

I'm thinking in lines of a "Hyper-blue".

Your suggestions?

probably just different blue from then and now.

different dye techniques. before i believe they used water based dyes that didnt saturate through like todays alcohol based dyes. martin can probably explain that better.

i personally like the faded softer colors better

Your assumption is not correct. With some colors, SW has lots of old stock from long gone suppliers. I believe they have been using a newer supplier in the last few years. SW makes a great effort to maintain veneer color consistency over time in their cues.

consistent veneers colors..

hi jazznpool..

you used to carry a "hyper blue" veneer when you had it on your website. But now i don't see the veneers are available?

currently sw does not take request for veneer color combinations. For instance. They use only what they have in stock which for blue is "coral blue" but on your site for westerncue.com i saw at least 4 different shades of blue.

so i guess i'm a little concern...if i have another cue maker whom fulfills my request for hyper blue...will it eventually fade?

I like rich and bright colors like purple and hyper blue.

I never made "hyper blue" but I do make electric blue and several other blues. I don't expect any of the veneers to fade in a pool cue that has auto clearcoat, lacquer, or UV finish.
