Price would be AN element
I just got a used Tasc, for about $2k less than what it cost to build. I am of the mindset that even if I never intend to sell a cue, it's still wise to consider if you will get out close to the amount of money you have in the cue. I am a big believer in making reasonably conservative decisions. If for some reason you have to give up pool, could you sell the items you have for close to the amount you have in them? They aren't investments, but rather a question of what is the market value for the items? Life happens and unfortunately we never know when.
I love my Tasc, but I would not have paid the amount for a new Tasc that Pete would have wanted, for 2 reasons: 1. I have a tough time justifying that amount of money for a cue, and 2. because his cues generally sell for about 1/3 less than what people paid for them brand new. If money was no object to me and I could have any cue, then I would get a custom Tasc. If I was willing to be patient and wait for the right 2nd hand Tasc to come along, then I would get a Tasc. If I wanted a custom cue because I have unique expectations and it is unlikely that I would find another cue with the unique elements I desire, then I would order a DZ.
Maybe I'm cheap but I have a hard time stomaching a 1/3 to 1/2 loss on the open market with Tascarellas.
