Earl for the money

Never been an Earl fan but I don't wish this ailment on anyone. I've had them since my mid twenties and they can be crippling.

Could be the cause of his erractic behavior of late? If so, I understand.

My close friend had one, and he said it's the worst pain you can imagine...constant agonizing torture. I visited him, he's a grown man and he was almost in tears, he just couldn't take it. What I didn't understand was that they only gave him two Vicodin per day...and they only last 2-4 hours each. You would think that with the extreme pain it causes, they would put you on Oxycontin or MS-contin, you know, the real heavy stuff. Vicodin even at 10mg isn't jack squat compared to those. I felt so bad for him I wanted to call his doctor and cuss him out.

My father was a Urologist so here's the scoop. A kidney stone is actually a small (or not so small) crystal like object that attempts to pass thru the ureter on the way from the kidney to the bladder. The stone has many sharp edges and the ureter is a very narrow tube. As the stone moves slowly thru the ureter, it must cut its way thru. Much like having a knife in your gut and someone twisting it back and forth.

Once it reaches the bladder, it can often be broken up by urine and passed out of the body, almost like sand. Unless it is too large and does not dissolve, and must be surgically removed. I hope this is not to graphic for you, but it's why there is extreme and relentless pain associated with kidney stones. Demerol works quite well to diffuse the pain. It's heavy duty, similar to Morphine, but not as addictive.

Sorry to hear about the kidney stones. My dad is a tough old son of a gun. I remember as a kid he had kidney stones and was laying on the floor, writhing in pain, telling me to call an ambulance (he didn't know what is was - thought he was dieing)....and I can remember seeing him get his hand slammed in a door, crushing two of his fingers and he didn't make a sound as he was taken to the hospital....so I can only imagine how painful those suckers must be. Maybe he will get better and play/act like his old self.
