Earl got spanked

Unfair situation provides unfair results

okay..I am a biigg earl the pearl fan..and i said last night at the US Open as i will say now to anyone on this forum and to any pro that was in ear shot of me out side of the Convention center when i said it loud enough for everyone to hear me

BAR NONE...IF EARL THE PEARL IS ON..THERE IS NO ONE ON THIS PLANNET THAT CAN BEAT HIM.

I have a huge problem with the match with cortez...first off if earl is so horrible ...why the heck was that entire side filled up with people wanting to see the match...people know that at any moment the old earl can show up and God help who he is playing.

ON a second note.. the first game of the match Cortez wins and an over zellous amount of cheers errupted. Now I sat there and thought..Cortez is a pro player..he isnt some unknown no rank player getting a win over a pro..it was really uncalled for ..the only reason it was done..was in my opinion to get under earl's skin. because they all know it does. NOW here is what gets me...Earl win a match and fair amount of claps and cheers come in and then there was the booing. Now if that doesnt take the desire and wind out of your sails i dont know what will. Here you are dedicating your life to a sport ..wanting to be liked..and respected and you hear boos. Yeah yeah i know some say deal with it..but i have never heard anyone boo Tiger after he drove the ball 400 yards..and trust me there are people there in the crowds that dont like him.

If you were there in real time watching the match..yes earl had some melt down moments...he was doing some crazy rubbing on the rails, and he threw down his towel...and there was some older lady behind him trying to keep him focused and calm..

Yeeet...did any of you happen to see the games he won after Cortez such a lead...Earl was one stroking and poking and running out like he didnt care...i was shocked to see him with no real effort play out like that. If people would just allow earl to fail on his own then i will quite defending him...but i saw first hand that people "on purpose" try to send him into melt down mode..that isnt fair.

Thats just my 2 cents.

Comment from Danny D just now comparing Luther to Earl. They were both "Wacky". "Maybe Earl a little bit more than Luther." My point exactly. BTW, whether now or in 1993, there is no one that can play 9 ball without thinking more than Earl. Just unbelievable. If you tossed the rock in the toilet, he'd still probably get out. But he if he gets through Charlie, they'll be another....and another....and another. Right now, race to 3 for Charlie.

Earl is out. Just like I said. Earl blew up and put the 9 ball in when Charlie was on the hill with pretty near a full table. Gee. How could I possibly have predicted this ??? Duh. Now, anyone want to argue now ?????

Double Duh.

What a a$$ hole. All these folks paid to see this damn match and this goof ball was looking for the back door the whole match. Great player, but beats himself every dang time.

I'm out

You say if He is so bad why are people lining the seats to watch him, then you say they are cheering Cortez so that may tell you why their there.

People don't boo Tiger woods because he doesn't break his club over a tree if he misses a shot.

Earl has taken from this sport way more then he has given to it. He has made a bad name for U.S. players during the mosconi cup. I have never seen another professional player of anything take so poorly to loosing then Earl. He is a disgrace.

I was also there and watched that match in its entirety, and we have VERY different viewpoints. It has become clear to me that the bulk of Earl-a-holics out there choose to defend him no matter what, and some of your opinions are definitely biased.

If some of you could try to separate yourselves from your undying love and support for Earl and try to look at his behavior objectively you might see things differently, assuming you are willing to accept another perspective about your precious Earl.

As far as "why the heck was the entire side filled up to watch this match"...I have some opinions about that:

1. Despite his behavior and unpredictability, when Earl in on he is fun to watch. I say that because I too believe he is the greatest nine-ball player that has ever lived.
2. People are curious about what he is going to say and do. Some find it entertaining for the wrong reasons (like slowing down to watch a car wreck), some find everything single thing he says and does during a match to be funny, some ruefully shake their heads in disbelief or amazement, but most enjoy watching great pool, which he is fully capable of delivering every time he plays.
3. Some people will just root for the Great American, exhibiting nationalistic pride and patriotism....which is admirable.

As far as the Pinoy crowd (some of them) being extroverted regarding the cheering for Corteza and booing Earl, well, that's fans for you. I do not approve of booing, not even when Reid Pierce was booed out of the convention center years ago after losing to Efren and throwing a little fit. But ask yourself what it must be like for the "other player" when 90% of the crowd cheers madly for Earl, whether he wins, gets a roll, or plays safe. That opponent has to be strong to overcome that, and they do, because they are professional. I think you are sympathetic for Earl, but claiming that the Pinoy contingent "got to him" and "took the desire" and "wind out of his sails" is a bit much.

Try transplanting Earl's antics onto another pro pool player who is not as successful as Earl and then tell me what you think of that pro...or does Earl get a pass because he is one of the greatest ever? I think most of his fans give him that pass because of his success. In our sports culture and hero-worship mentality we routinely let things slide if the person is successful, gifted and/or talented.

Say what you will, but Corteza outplayed Earl for most of the match (and even that statement will offend some people because they can't stand any comments made about Earl that can be perceived as negative, even if it is factual).

Did Earl throw in the towel on quite a few games by just half-heartedly trying certain shots? Sure he did.
Did he amaze the crowd by running out a few games whilst one-stroking the balls?
Sure he did.

But...Corteza held it together and pulled through.

All week long the Earlaholics were heartily cheering for Earl, both loud and long, and no one complained. They gleefully giggled with every safety, and snickered during his antics, never once thinking of how it might affect his opponents. But as soon as the "other side" became a bit boisterous it bothers you, because they are "against" Earl.

I'm done.

Have fun and shoot straight.

That is exactly why he feels he needs those accessories: If they can invent/ use new gadgets, then so can I. Make it so we all have to play with 1 cue and we got a game.

He told me about it for an hour once.

This makes total sense now .... Perhaps more of a protest and display than anything else.

I couldn't do it, so HE CAN'T DAMNIT.... I mean it.... Those younger players are too good for me, so they're too good for him......

I mean he's MY age and I know I can't beat those guys, so he doesn't have a shot.

That is the most ludicrous position I've heard in a while.

Jaden

Last I heard, Earl was selling classroom space for nuts who believed he could last through the entire US Open. On sale, just for you. Ludicrous ?
Ya. Sure. Bridge ? Only $24 bucks. Via pay pal.

WHen i said people cheered Cortez it was a large section by the entrance that was his cheering squad..Hey im all for people cheering thier player i encourage it...but all during the night all you heard was..where is strickland playing ..is he on the tv table again..

As for the tiger thing people dont boo him because they respect him..tiger had cursed and showed frustration, i seen him slam his club down..but Earl got booed just for wining.. that wasnt very cool..

i dont agree with that last statement..Look how many years Earl put into this sport..since he was a kid..i am sure that he has had more up years of great sportsman like conduct than not...i am sure some one can pin point when these behaviors started..

look i work with Children with Autism and i am a certified instuctor of a Crisis Intervention Program called Theroputic Options..there is a truth that is missed with Earl..

Behavior is neither mystical nor magical, it does not just appear..it is purposful. it either gets the person something or gets them away from something..It has a reason..so there is an underlying current of issuses that bring about this behavior..i hope that one day he no longer needs them ..but i still love the way the guy shoots when he is on...damn!

Hey you have some valid points..And im not giving earl a free pass.. And Cortez shot his ass off ,hell after watching him shoot.. i thought damn that dude could win this whole thing. The crowd response to earl wining was really a one back at you for the loud chearing that Cortez got. I do agree for those that have to deal with some of the things that he does..it can be hard..i felt for Cortez when earl got on him about rack..but i will say this..i am not a complete defender of earl and some of the thigns he does are over board....buuuuut the booing may be part of some games ..i dont thnk it has a place there..just my opininon..and not to a player who you know is going to react crazy to it.

I will say this..we all have that friend that to us is cool as a fan..but to everyone else he is the biggest azzhole you ever wana met..and we constantly defend them and say.. "please for give my buddy..he just like that" sooo there hahaha
