I was watching the video of the 2003 World Championship semi-final on Youtube yesterday, the match between Earl and Thorsten Hohmann. When Earl made his way down to the table he kissed Michaela on the cheek. I couldn't tell if she was surprised, honked, or if it was expected.

Is/Was that the norm for the world championship TV matches back in the day?
