Earl should be barred

Man you people are funny.

None of this means anything,

Carry on then........
I wonder if Earl thinks the same thing when he reads this, Im sure he has been by here a few times just lurking at least.

The quintessential Earl.
Look at him on one of his few times playing here in the Philippines,
try to observe what he was wearing at that time. ;)

How old is this picture? There's three things I notice right away
1) Headphones - if he wore these all the time, he'd probably be a nicer person and would stop calling the audience member's names because they didn't clap for him or because they rooted for his opponent.

(what he isn't wearing)

2) He's not wearing the football glove on his right hand.

3) There's no tennis tape on his cue.

This was way back June 2002, the name of the event is "Motolite 9-Ball World Challenge" , if i could remember it right, i think it was Busta who won this one. Secondly he was wearing headphone basically is to
negate the boos that he sometimes received from the audience if
i could remember it right. :D Hhhhmmm....so do we now suggests
that Earl should wear one every tournament game???....hehehe..

I've been wondering all this time, years, why he hasn't gotten his ass seriously kicked and now I might know why. Thanks!

I've been ignoring this thread cause I figured it would just go away. But it didn't. I haven't read even the first post. I just clicked on page 5 to get to were I could reply. Not planning on looking at this post again so don't bother replying to this.

How stupid can you be. Who the heck are you to say something so ridiculous. Your Mr. (or Ms.) perfect I suppose and you've never been upset about anything in your life. He's passionate about his pool game. Man, that's a big surprise. What a ridiculous post.

Way off base here..... all pool players are passionate about their games. Only Earl calls the audience members a$$holes because they clap for his opponent. I certainly don't want to get in the middle of a war between his fans & his detractors but I couldn't let this one slp by without pointing out the difference. :)

I would recommend the squishy foam earplugs and that Earl have "special" glasses made with side blinders. That would probably take care of him being distracted by audience members. Don't know if he could insert the squishy earplugs with his gloves on though.:D

I guess maybe I should have read the posts in this thread before replying. That is certainly way out of line. I think I just assumed it was about his normal stuff because I assumed that in the pro arena they would have rules against behavior that bad and there would be no need for this post because he would have been already punished in some manner, suspension or something. He actually got away with this and nothing happened?

He gets away with it all the time. I haven't read the whole post either and I don't know if it's mentioned but I've been to a few tournaments where he's gotten into arguments with the audience members and called them names. His antics are geared soley towards his opponents. ;)

Things are about to change. I have it on very good authority that Mr. Earl will be FINED in the IPT for his carrying on. He can say as he pleases but he can also be fined, over & over, & over. FINALLY some repercussions from officials!! :)

Captain,

I saw your later post but I need to reply to this. Have you ever seen Earl in action in person? I have many times and if someone treated me the way I've seen him treat others, one of us would be laying on the ground and not getting up any time soon. If you haven't seen him in action in person, then your post is WAY OFF BASE!!

Thanks Timberly. You're a nice person! I told you that before didn't I?

I was playing in the one pocket division at the Derby City on the table next to Earl who was playing Hiroshi Takenaka and it was disgusting the way he acted. Right off the bat he was insulting to his opponent and was disruptive to my match with my opponent and when a fan asked to keep it down he was insulting to the fan. In my opinion it was nothing more than a sharking tactic. Hiroshi was a perfect gentleman who should have kicked his ass both on the table and in the parking lot.

I must say, I've seen him go off more than once with his rants and mumblings...complaining about everything from the table conditions to what his opponent was wearing. You have to admit though he is colorful guy and where ever he is shooting, those stands near his table are packed. He provides a good laugh whether he knows it or not and will go down as one of the finest players ever as well as one of the missing stooges...Moe, Larry, Curly, Shemp, Curly Joe aaaaaaand Earl!

I've never been to DCC, but isn't it supposed to be a anything goes sharkfest? If so what difference does it make to anyone but Earls opponent what Earl says or does at the table.

Terry<just curious:confused:

Damn my post just got sent to the middle of the pack.......MIKE

No, I don't believe the DCC tournaments are intended to be shark-fests.

In 2003 & 2004 I attended the DCC and played in an event each year (great fun by the way). It was discussed in the player's meeting that when your not shooting, you should be in your seat (quietly)...and not talking to the crowd. I had one opponent standing on the rail and talking to his partner for the first half of our first 1-pocket game - I asked him to please be seated quietly while I was at the table and he complied. If he didn't I would have talked to the tournament director to make it happen.

The kind of behavior that Earl displayed (among others), although it may be crowd pleasing, is a total sign of disrespect to their opponent. This keeps the player from playing to their potential and fully concentrating on their pool game. It should not be allowed, PERIOD.

As great as Earl is, and he is, you would think he could win without the theatrics. I agree with many that it should be reported as it occurs to make sure that Earl, and others, know that it won't be tolerated any longer. Then if it continues, disciplinary action should be taken. Please don't ask what, this was discussed in a previous thread and went nowhere-the people who run tournaments can come up with their own solutions, but as for now, it's up to all the players to stop it before it becomes an issue.

I'm all for personality at the table, in fact I like it, but it should be during YOUR turn at the table and not be a disruption to your opponent.

Just a final thought to all those that enjoy watching Earl go nuts and act like an *ss: What if you paid $200-$500 entry fee, plane fare, hotel costs, etc. so you're in about $1200-$1500 and think you have a chance of getting in the money only to have Earl or someone else next to you ranting and raving where you can't help but pay attention to it, and you do something stupid during your game causing you to lose because of lack of total concentration. Or better yet, your playing Earl and getting good rolls, playing well, he's not quite on his game and you have a chance to beat him; then he goes nuts (or into his act) and you can't think anymore cause you have not been in that situation before. Is it still amusing to YOU!

Just my 2 cents worth.

Dave

Just as a side note, slightly off topic, but all of this stuff with Strickland's histronics reminds me of John MacEnroe and his theatrics in his tennis matches.

Okay, we return you to the program currently in progress...

Having witnessed some of Earl's antics, I would disagree. McEnroe would blast the referees not the other player. Earl goes after the player. I just don't understand why the other players that he goes after don't at least get in his face and tell him to shut up! And, given his reputation, why don't the TDs watch him more closely and intervene right away? I think Earl would stop it if he was called on it and that would not only help him out but pool too.

All About Earl

It's funny when i read all this stuff about Earl and think about the years i have known him. I was the T.D. at his first major win at Caesars Tahoe in 1982. We became friends and I served as T.D. during many of the tournaments in his heyday (the 80's and early to mid 90's). I had few if any problems with Earl during that period (you didn't hear this type of discussion about him then).
And I'll tell you why. The man I learned from and with was Pat Fleming and we had the attitude that to be a good T.D. you actually had to watch the tournament (what a revelation). And when someone got out of line you sat them down. Once or twice I had to get in Earl's face about him standing up and talking while his opponent was shooting, or talking to the crowd during his match. I explained to him that such behavior would not be tolerated, and he could lose a game or games, and second be forfeited.
And guess what, he got the message! He knew I wasn't bluffing.
In brief Pat and I didn't take any crap from Earl (or any other players) and he knew he had to play pool in our tournaments and not screw around. The bottom line for Earl was when he concentrated on playing he played great and won many of those tournaments.
Somehow, somewhere Earl was allowed to run free with little restriction on his behavior, until he got so outrageous that something had to be done. By then it was too late.
If I ever run another tournament and Earl is playing in it, he'll either act right or he won't be playing long. And he knows it too.
The last two major tournaments i worked at were the 1998 and 1999 U.S. Opens with Scott Smith. There was one minor incident with Earl over racking the balls which we straightened out and that was it. There were no stories that came out of those events about Earl and his bad behavior because we didn't allow it to happen.
