now "Earl the Nomad". From NY to Philly to New Joisy. Yep, Earl is the new house-pro at Sandcastle. Saw it on FB an hour ago.

Sandcastle is becoming quite the pool spot. That is where Pat Fleming has the Accu-Stats challenge matches.

Earl being the pro there is a bonus for the regulars. He's always fun to be with on the offs and in person.

What does a house-pro actually do?
Do they get paid a salary and if so, what do they do to justify the budget for their department?

They give lessons. Took a lesson from Earl at Fusco's near Philly when he was house pro there. Minimum 2 hour lesson. Not sure but some of the cost of the lesson could go to the house plus he is a halo image for the room and could draw more business just by being there.

More of figure-head position. Gets free pool and sells lessons and clinics. May also involve getting entry-fee money for tournaments. These HP deals vary from place-to-place.

They would get my business over another room just to be able to listen to him, let alone watch him play.

.

Sandcastle, I was there once and it smelled like mold when I first walked in the door.

It was when JB played his big match a couple few years ago.

Earl is awesome....

That was just the "salty" sea air you were smelling. ;)

Sadly, I fear Earl will meet the same fate one day that Lassiter did, dying alone and broke.

Luther did not die "alone and broke," as you put it. He lived with his brother in a nice home that had a separate room with a pool table for him to practice on. Luther was never wealthy, but he always had enough money to pay his own way. He was single by choice.

Earl's situation is another story entirely.

IIRC Earl is married, right? Or did that train already leave the station?

He was decades ago. I read he was in a relationship a while ago and that was part of the reason he moved to Philadelphia. Don't know the status of that relationship, nor is really any of my business!

If I remember correctly, it was mentioned here sometime ago that Earl was not paid salary at Steinway and just got accommodation/food or some peanuts deal. That is shocking bad deal for a legend.

A place to live ain't too bad a deal. Better than breaking into tractor trailers.

and at the time, it was a big upgrade-He got an apt also and he found a girlfriend too It was always a matter of time though-Sooner or later he was gonna be 86'd. Im surprised he lasted as long as he did. Im really not ragging on him, he just is unable to control himself at times.
