Earl The Pearl

It's funny though, with all of Earl's quirks, I have noticed a couple of things:

1) Other than Efren, he is the most talked about Pool Player.
2) People love to watch him play. Even in the old matches on TV, when
Earl is on there, I find myself rooting for him to win .... lol

I would bet that the main source of his troubles lies in the fact that he himself has realized he has peaked as a player, and his divorce might have been a rude awakening of that fact. He seems like a egocentric type of person, which would not be easy to live with.

I think people kind of considered Earl as the 'The Great White Hope' of Pool, and some still cling to him because of that. I think that Corey Deuel is replacing Earl in that respect of being 'The great White Hope', but Corey really hasn't lived up to that the last 2-3 years. Earl is sort of like the Marciano of Pool.

Not everyone loves to watch him..

Just a question here, as I personally think that Earl is having some major problems...

I just watched an old game between Earl and Jon Horsfall after Earl's meltdown phase had already begun, and he really didn't give Jon any of the "usual Earl treatment". I've never seen any of this between Earl and Rodney, or Earl and Shawn Putnam. My point is that it always seems like the problems are when Earl is playing someone much younger, smaller, more mild mannered, etc. (Nick Vandenberg and Efren for example). Has anyone else seen this behavior with Earl and anyone big enough or tough enough to kick his ass?

Kinda of reminds me of poker, there's a guy named Phil Hellmuth (great player), who used to get real carried away with his attitude and mouth until he crossed paths with an oldtimer named Sam Grizzle. Grizzle basically put up with Phil's nonsense for awhile and then challenged him to a meeting in the parking lot. Sam did a little speed tuning and Phil came back with a different attitude (still needs a little work, but much better).

Any stories of Earl and someone who won't tolerate his nonsense?

Well, lets lock Earl and Dennis Hatch in room for 10 minutes, and well, just see what happens.

Table Etiquette

All I have to say is Earl is not the only sore loser who acts assanine at times. CJ pulled the same crap on me on a quarterfinals match on the winner's side (guaranteed 5th place out of 128 players), but I let it get to me.

It was the 1994 or 1995 California State 9 Ball Championship, the event that preceded the Bicycle Club Casino semi-annual pro tournaments. The format was races to 7, and I had CJ 5-0, playing perfect up to this point. Then CJ started his slurs and rude comments, so I went off on him. From what I later learned, it's a good thing I did not act on my emotions, for I probably would have been seriously hurt. :p I also went off on the TD for allowing such behavior, which made no difference whatsoever other than piss me off even more. The end result...? I lost my focus and the match 7-5, not winning another single game. And then I went on to lose my next match to get 5th place.

However, there have been occasions in which I acted poorly, as well, but not as bad as these two for sure! These guys are unreal! lol :D But they are not at all alone... I could list so many moves I've witnessed many pros pull, and it could be considered cheating, as some have alluded here.

I went out and searched on youtube for some Strickland videos and I found a series this guy made about Efren and Earl called The Color of Money (like the movie :D). And boy was I blown away. I can't even fathom making the shots they were making let alone making them in competition. Thinking about that video and then imagining what i saw last week on TV bums me out. cus that dude was really awesome...

... and what the hell is up with the two gloves? Is he gonna step into the octagon any time soon?

Earl

was just watching Earl vs Nick match again and saw in the fifth game he moved the cue ball into postion with his cue before breaking ,that's against the ipt's rules if i'm not mistaken..wouldn't he really exploded if the ref had call that....

There have been some that said that this video shows some of the best 9-ball played in history......I agree........The way Earl and Efren were running racks was fantastic.....

I'm just sincerely curious why you think you would have been seriously hurt?

I heard CJ is a martial arts expert or the sort. I have no ill feelings towards him; I understand it was the heat of the battle. We resolved our differences that week. :D

i heard a story about before earl went pro he was gambling with a biker at the bikers house and they were playing for quite a bit of money. well as the story goes earl was on his last game against the biker and made the 8 ball in then got perfect shape for a straight in 9 ball shot to the corner pocket. the biker pulled out a gun and put it to earls head and told earl that if he made the 9 ball hed blow his brains out. well earl looked up at him and said then youll have to kill me and slammed the 9 ball in as hard as he can without looking back. the biker didnt kill earl because he liked the fact that he had guts and stood up to him and payed earl his money and then earl went on his way.. that is the story that i heard from a friends dad.. dont know if its true or not but to me that says that earl isnt afraid of anyone and its just coincedence that he picks on younger smaller players..

sorry about the long post..

I remember seeing the match last night. I'd probably just blow him off if I was playing. I've played a couple of people like that. Now if I was in the stands I'd be a smart ass for sure.

However I do feel this is good for the IPT. People love drama like this and it could help make the show more interesting for TV. More viewers means more sponsors and more money in pool.

They should dedicate atleast a half hour to Earl every single episode. I won't watch it. But people who don't play pool because it is "Boring" will.

I was sitting near Earl once during a match. Not even talking loud or about him. He missed...I made eye contact (maybe I smiled) and he walked straight over to me waving his cue around & talking something I didn't understand about my mother. Grade A azzhole!!!
