Earl's US Open is over...

I do agree that there is way more competition nowadays than ever before, and I do agree that Earl is one of the best ever to pick up a pool cue,he just has to get his head screwed on right.Time will tell if this EVER happens again.

Jimmy,
What a nostaligic post!
Remember when you and me first discussed Earl? That was a real slobber-knocker! WW3 on AZB! :bash:

(And yes, I agree with you also.)

AHHH,The good old days.LOL.

IMHO... I wish he would just sit and watch accu-stat tapes of him back in the 80's and early 90's, and I believe he would find some of his problems of today. And it may pump him up enough to where he will get the burning desire to want to do it again. The people on the rail do it cause they know it gets to him if he can just block it out, you will see pool played at its best.

If you look back to then, watch how fast Earl walks around the table not thinking about nothing but his next shot he never looks at the crowd its almost like some one came on the mic. and said the building is on fire and its hill-hill and Earl knows he's got to finish to get the cash. IMO.. it looks like he is in slow motion today and he is thinking to much about what is going on around him instead of the lay out of the table and just running out like he is capable of doing almost blind folded.

When you watch him play today he is to concerned with what is going on in the crowd and what people are saying-faces people are making and I believe that is what affects his game today. Because the Earl of yesterday run around the table like a race horse running out from every where, the only pool player Ive ever seen get out line on his shots and stay out of line, jack-up and sphere balls in from every where and just knock the back of the pockets running out.

Earl still has tremendous T-A-L-E-N-T if he can just apply it to the pool table like he once did, it will be a show to see. I look forward to it but who knows if it will ever happen, but one thing for sure just like some one that goes to college and gets a degree you can never take that away from he/she, just like you can never take away what Earl Strickland has accomplished in pool he will take all those World Championships to his grave.

Good Luck and I wish him the best he will always have my respect.

Players of today are no longer intimidated by anyone and frankly there are plenty of guys out there who could beat him even if he plays at his best. That doesn't mean that those guys are any better or that Earl "lost it", it just shows that competition fierce these days. It is harder to win big tournaments than ever before. There are just too many good players out there capable of beating anyone, you can't get easy matches. In future, new players will come along and it is just going to get tougher and tougher for anyone. With the nature of 9ball, there must be like 30 or so players capable of winning US Open or WPC, perhaps even more.

Im sorry but I have never seen a 9 ball player like earl in my life. Earl was one of MAYBE 2 or3 guys in the history of pool to hit people with 5 pack so consistenly it was sick. probally the most gifted player in history. Nobody could match his shot making ability. In my opinion he made efren look like a kid most of the time. The only way efren could beat him was if he gave up mentally.

When he played like he did in his prime "no one" could beat him at 9 ball. He did not even have people ask back then, except those wanting to lose a little to learn ;) I just think he needs to be stronger mentally, but no one is perfect certainly...
I remember at a tournament a long time ago, early-mid 90s or so, the Filipinos saying we will play 9 ball with anyone in the world, but Earl.

In late 1979 and the early 80's I would go to Houston on leave as I was in the military. At Cassidy's or Fast Eddies on Longpoint you would catch Earl playing. He was so dominate that it was uncanny. Watching him give up way too much weight and outrunning it was awsome to see. I played Earl on several occassions with enormous weight and lost but learned a lot from the young man. He was great to watch and bet on. Winning some of the bets and losing other when he got very tired and played too long. Those were the days. He was always polite to me, him using my cue sometimes seem to make me a better player later. Maybe he just taught it a few things that I needed to know. He taught me a lot as did others there. I watch now and miss that Earl that I would see in the bars and playing in the halls. Maybe he will return, I hope so

Go Earl!

Earl was one of the best ever for a long time.
His accomplishments will stand the test of time.
Seeing him play while he was at the top of his game was pure joy.
I'm pulling for Earl to return to form.
It would be great for the sport and all of those who love it.

Strickland vs. Charlie Williams starting now. Should be a good match.
I know i will watch every minute of it.
INJOY.

I totally agree with you.I've always respected his game but not his antics. The guy is a big douchebag with talent. Its always nice to see a character in all sports but this guy has disrespected so many players he deserves to lose.I was hoping Peach would of beat the shit out of him when they had a confrontation on TV.Alot of talent but not many brain cells left!

Earl Lost to William Compton 11-6...

In my eyes, Earl is STILL the man.

Congrats to Mr. Compton, that's one to tell your grandkids about!

Well yesterday, I was at the event table when he played Charlie Williams. BTW, this was the first time that I have seen Earl up close, to hear his rantings (of a mad man I might add).

I must say that he did not deserve to win the way he was acting. He was talking to the fans telling them how bad he was, how they shouldn't have bet on him, or supported him, how he couldn't play - and on and on and on. This was absoulutely PATHETIC, so much in fact that I did not feel sorry for him at all.

The guy next to me says that Earl does all of this talking all the time and that he is afraid to catch his eye, because he will pick you out of the crowd and comment to you, and that he was really afraid of Earl. Yes indeed, that is how freaky he is. Just like being trapped on a subway with a lunatic ranting and where you can't get away.
