I had this shot come up recently, nothing is really hard maybe to many dicisions it's kinda do or die I'm shooting low. Tough to draw exactly but the angle on the 4 was hard to hold the one straight enough(to draw back for 8 in bottom left corner) and I would of really had to force it to criss cross the table for anything better. Do or die really what's your play.(I only hope I embeded my picture right)

You don't want to criss cross the table really, try to shoot to hard and your subject to miss. I'd roll the 4 in with a touch of right. That would set up a sharp enough angle to use low and maybe a touch of left and come back 2 rails for the 8. This way you stay well above the 8 ball and don't risk getting hooked by the 10 ball.

I'd draw a diagram but you didn't include the wei code. That's really helpful to set up the same exact shot.

Kyle, I think the position calls for a conservative approach. Cinch the four ball by slow rolling it and then draw two rails off the one back onto to the eight. You should get out. Even if, after cinching the four, you make the one and misplay the shape on the eight (perhaps forcing yourself to bank it), at least you're always getting the first shot at the eight.

Unless you're on very loose equipment, I don't think the reward is great enough to chance missing the four ball to get straighter on the one.

Take what the table is giving you -- it's enough to run out in this case.

I can't emphasize enough how correct Rodd and SJM are. The pro way to play it is exactly as they described. However, I will say it differently. Instead of slow rolling the 4 in, I would hit it it with soft draw, killing the cueball about 8 inches off the rail to position "A". Then, low left to position "C". This is very common rail play.

The wrong way to play this is to go two rails off the four to try to get straight on the one, then draw straight back to get on the 8.

Here's are the positions:

Sorry Rod I drew it over best I could will include both from here on. I like the shot you and SJM suggest but recall ruling it out for some reason (I think 1 ball was more mid rail then I pictured was scared of leaving myself on 50 yard line again whatever it was I just didn't feel good about shooting the 4 ball) anyways I banked the one in the bottom left corner to leave a straight 4, hoping that if I missed the bank I'd tie up the corner for the 14&8. Really had to come up with a shot to ask just to try to post my own picture, and to save SJM from doing it for me (much apprieciated though.)

So far we all agree just slightly different methods or wording. I think the key here is leave enough angle on the one. This does two things, pocket speed on the one is slower plus c/b speed is faster. That not only makes it easier two get the c/b back but it stays well above the 8. You sure don't want to hook yourself and the 8 is easy from here.

Yep, this has been covered, roll the 4 and shoot the 1 coming off the 2 rails for shape is the shot.

No problem Kyle, I just mentioned it so you can do it next time.

What Tate and the other said I think is the correct way to do it. There are a few variations that you can try, one I think is kind of fun and is one of my favorite shots. This only works when the ball is frozen on the rail. Shoot the 4 with a touch of draw but alot of left, and your object is to hit the rail first before hitting the 4. The cueball will shoot straight across and the english will take it behind the 1. This shot is kind of tough to do, but it's fun to play around with. I would never use it in tournament play or gambling, unless I really had no other option (which I doubt would be the case). Here is the diagram:

)END

I don't know how to put the diagram in my post, can someone show me how?

Ahh- your comfort level will need to take a back seat here- the way outlined is the best way to go about making this game yours.

Your comment about the location of the 1: It really doesn't matter where on that side rail it is- it is a washout. If the 1 is closer to the side pocket, it makes the shape on the 8 easier and the shape on the 1 tougher. If the 1 is up to the 2nd diamond, it makes shape on the 8 tougher and shape on the 1 easier. Past the 2nd diamond? Now it is a different ball game 'coz you need to use hi-right and touchy shape on 8.
