Ebay Mystery....

Scarred but Smarter
I'm just curious if anybody can figure this one out. Every time I type in "Scruggs Cue" on Ebay, a whole bunch of these "DP" dale perry cues pop up. I dont seem to find any reference to Scruggs cues in the dp listings. I dont know much about these dp cues except that there's a bunch of them on the auction blocks at any given time. Not nearly as many Scruggs. Do these two cue makers have some sort of connection?

Sneaky Lister

The person listing the cues has this line in white text on a white background in html: que scruggs palmer mottey josey dishaw meucci josswest joss schon

If you load the page and Press "Ctrl+F" then type "scruggs" and hit enter, you'll see it highlighted.

You know, this is a low life sales tactic. Southwest for sale, not scruggs, not schon, not szamboti. Now I expect it from some real nits, but to be THE cuemaker and have to do that.. c'mon.. you mean your work doesn't stand out on its own you have to do this?

Joe (---damn thought I saw everything :(

"low life sales tactic"??? simply a lure to get a hit

kinda like promoting a cue maker on azb! huh?

btw the cue for sale is a dp - also southwest and szamboti arent mentioned

No, its not the same. People who want to see a Mottey and type in Mottey, don't want to see a Dale Perry. Or they would have typed in Dale Perry. The cues are SO different, its not even funny. The fact is, its just annoying. It would be more like me saying we got in a new Balabushka, and show a Schon on that page. Its flat out deception.

Promoting and deception are, at least last time I checked, very different. But here on AZ I found out "exact copy" doesn't mean to duplicate, it means to come close. And I only thought close counted in horseshoes and hand grenades. So who knows.

Is it Dale Perry doing this or someone reselling his cues?

You can eliminate this by searching only titles. I would suggest creating a search in the "billiards" category for "scruggs", titles onle, and leave out the word "cue".

I just pulled up one of Dale's ads. It's him doing it.

Pretty damn cheesey!

Well, DP's are like Scruggs you know.
They're both cues.
It amazes me how many one of a kinds he can come out with every week.

he doesnt state anywhere that the cue is something different than it is!
he simply put invisible tags in his html that would bring hits.
eaby does just about the same thing by letting people pay extra to be at the top of the list. is that a deceptive low life selling technique as well?

As someone who took a web design course or two, its the equivalent of me putting billiardcue.com, or billiarwarehouse.com in my head content as keywords. Its wrong and in poor ettiquette.

Paying for a bigger ad in a phone book is would be a better analogy for being at the top of an ebay listing. So no, if you PAY the price, you get the service.

it's a loophole

dont' suppose you've ever taken any tax loopholes

No, I have an accountant.

Its no loophole, its deception. Look if you need to use other peoples names to promote your product then you are in the wrong business. I promote my main business and never have I used other businesses to springboard mine.

you do know you are held responsible for what you accountant puts on your tax return don't you?

i know you and classiccues would never resort to any sneaky or deceptive practices to sell cues! i didnt mean to insinuate otherwise.

Jeff,
We try and list as accurately as we can, and I wasn't talking about the cue sales. I have my own business that has nothing to do with pool. Thats what I was talking about.

Joe (--if you have the goods, you get the sales... period. Of course a little personality doesn't hurt either.

Not exactly - it's a violation of E-Bay policy:

Keyword Spam

Keyword spamming occurs when members place brand names or other inappropriate keywords in a title or description for the purpose of gaining attention or diverting members to a listing. Keyword spamming in listings is not permitted on eBay. The text sellers place in listings must be directly relevant to the item being sold.

Violations of this policy may result in a range of actions, including:

Listing cancellation
Limits on account privileges
Account suspension
Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings
Loss of PowerSeller status

They ban this for a reason. It's irritating and wastes the buyers time to have these ads pop up when you are looking for something specific.
