eBay to ban sales of products containing ivory

Thought this news might be of interest to some here. I'm not crazy about ivory myself, generally speaking. I mean, I don't hate it, but I don't necessarily look for it when considering cues. But it obviously is a component of many, many cues, and would almost certainly effect some of you who buy/sell here.

Whether it be inlays, joints, ferrules, Hoppe rings, etc., it will all be banned come January.

What do you guys think of this?

Wow that sucks for cuemakers and cue collectors that sell on Ebay.

Ebay fails again....there is a reason their stock is down nearly 60%...they are a horribly run company

Ebay and Ivory

When it comes to Ebay, they don't care in the slightest whether the ivory is legal or not. The only thing they care about is their image (what little they have remaining). As pool players are a huge minority compared to animal rights groups, Ebay will take the most expedient route (as always). If that ban goes through, Schon cues will be the ones affected the most. It seems that Schon uses pre-ban elephant ivory in all but their bottom of the line cues.

Once again, they can afford to be, as firearms sales are a very small portion of their possible business. Here in CA, places that used to take ads for firearms first stopped taking ads for handguns, then banned ads for long guns as well. It seems that all who ban such ads do so under the banner of "The public good", but only when it's an item that doesn't hurt their bottom line.

lol I was a Federally Licensed Firearms Dealer for over 10 years. So I was one of the ones *giving* the great deal through the Recycler before they became "civic minded" =)

The 2nd Amendment..... Isn't that the right to arm bears? I've always thought that was a good idea. Bears need to be able to fight back against those pesky hunters.

E-Bay is a wonderful example of a monopoly at work. They have demonstrated that for years and still have no real competition. Before they purchased Paypal it was a pretty well run business and look what they have done to that. Certainly they did accomplish their goals which was and is to make money for themselves period. That is what they are all about.

Exceptions for some items with small amounts of ivory, such as pianos, will be made, though the items must have been made before 1900.

Items that have a large amount of ivory, regardless of their age, will not be permitted for sale. These would include chess sets, ivory broaches and ivory jewelry.

It does not list cues as band sale items, it just points out that the Ivory has to come from pre 1900, and not be in large quanties. A piano has much more ivory in the keys than any cue does

I would agree that cues with ivory listed in the description will be banned. To get around that, sellers will merely need to avoid listing the fact that there is ivory. In certain cues (again, Schon comes to mind) ivory is a given. It will most affect cues that come from makers that use both ivory and ivory substitutes. In a case like that, I will just request the seller's e-mail address, and take my questions there. Then you have to hope that the seller is an honest one.

I agree with the ban and here is why...

Until there is a way to accurately determine what exaclty constitutes pre-ban and post-ban ivory I feel the ban by Ebay is justified. Simply proclaiming ivory in a cue as pre-ban doesn't necessarily make it so.

I have heard the argument that you cannot import pre-ban ivory into the US. I believe this argument is farsicle at best. In a time when customs officials are hopefully focusing on the importation of wmd, I would argue that the importation of illegal ivory has been at the bottom of their list at best.

Next is the argument that it is just an elephant, right? Well any responsible hunter will tell you what happens to their beloved land and the animals that live on it when you eliminate a species, any species. The ecosystem collapses.

So, I agree with the ban. I think it will help elephants. I think what happens in Africa or India affects the planet and as a result affects me. If I have to go without ivory in my cues I feel that is a very small price to pay indeed.

In coming to this conclusion I read a few websites, both for and against. But what really changed my mind was the following article:

If someone can make a better case for allowing ivory sales on Ebay, I am all ears.
