I'd like to know what the MAIN difference is between cored ebony and non-cored ebony. Is the "feel", and "hit", totally different? Which would you prefer if you had the choice? I know ebony is heavy and for a cue to have a big piece in it, it must be cored to keep weight down, but I don't know the difference in how it feels...HELP?!?!?!? PM me if you'd rather not post it here please, Jeff

coring wood

Hi,
It can depend on the wood chosen for the core and the relative size of the core. A softer wood core will hit/feel softer or mushy. A firmer wood core will play differently. A laminated wood core will definitely play firmer. Weight considerations are a major reason for coring ebony as you stated. Hit/feel are relative issues depending on materials, sizes and jointing techniques.

On top of what Tom said, the taper for the forearm plays an important role also, especially if it's not cored, This is relative to the stiffness and weight distribution and overall balance. Myself, I preferred cored all day, every day.
JMO, The can of worms could get opened on this one.

Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate opinions from two of the boards' highly respected cuemakers on this. Now I need to get my j/b cue built....hmmmm

not a cue maker, but i have heard that non-cored ebony can "move" more then cored ebony....
