Economy and Pool

There was a thread on here sometime back that most people were saying that over the years poolrooms did well when the economy was in the toilet.

Fatboy, myself, and a few others pointed out that their are so many more things to do now than in past dips in the economy. The lotto in Florida is down 15% so far this year. Dog racing and horse racing is way down all over the country. Before this is over there will be 2 or three more dog tracks close and a few horse tracks. The property that the tracks are on is worth more than most tracks can make in 10 years.

My point is that there will continue to be poolrooms closing and very few new ones opened to replace them even when the economy gets better. Johnnyt

I'm not being a nit picker, I just want to see your references and see what other businesses (sport based) have been affected by the economy.

Sports bars, MLB attendence figures, NASCAR, Tennis and so on, are these included in the 'dip' in business from the bad economy. Is the overall business in Reno and Vegas down?

Where did you get all this information?

Well you're kind of mixing things together there: everything you listed is about gambling and taking steady risks and losses. While some people may go to the pool hall to gamble, I'm sure many more go just for the joy of playing.

What I worry about is that with this economy, people aren't going to be buying as many tables, which means their kids won't learn to love the game the way a lot of us did, and won't take it up as a hobby when they're older... Remember when people could afford to buy something as expensive as a pool table because it was cool to have one? I remember back in the late 60s early 70s, everybody had a pool table and they didn't even play!

Unfortunately I feel that pool is sliding into the past, slowly and quietly...

I can tell you that average NBA attendance is down league-wide. I would assume it's the same across most sports. It's really hard to get people to spend the kind of money it takes to attend a major sporting event. Not saying that no one will do it... but it's certainly not as easy to sell it.

In simplest terms, the cost of living will always go up and the average wage/income will not at the same rate and will infact , level off at some point. Reason number one why americans in debt is in record numbers and getting worse everyday.

There is no end in sight and all non essentials will suffer , IMO. :)

I live in FL and the Lotto loss was on the news today. I was in the Greyhound business for years and still follow them every day, so I know what's going on in it. I also follow the handles at both dog tracks and horses...the handle are down at just about all of them.

As far as the other sports you mentioned...I don't know if their numbers are down or not, but my guess would be yes. Johnnyt
