Efren and I leaving Derby City Classic

NICE!...nothing better than spending some time the great guys you look up to!

Did you steal Efrens peanuts when he was snoozin? :)

Gerry

OK, Gerry, you coaxed another little story out of me with the peanuts:
The flight to Atlanta was short so the flight attendants were giving out peanuts and gingerbread cookies instead of a meal. Efren declined because he was relaxing without dentures and didn't want anything to eat. I'm sure he thought they were crunchy cookies but I have eaten those gingerbread cookies and peanuts so I asked the attendant to give me one of each and I showed them both to Efren and he kind of shook his head no but I opened the gingerbread cookies and I told him they melt in your mouth and he tried one of the two cookies that were in the package. It was gone in no time. Like Bustamante, I only shared my snack with him but I think he would have liked to have had the other cookie but it was already eaten by his "backer". :D

JoeyA ( I ate the peanuts too.)

Joey,
Am happy for you! Do you now believe me about, as you called it, the "way of the bayawak"? My kingdom for water? Charity is the root of all the luck.

Hey Joey, It was very nice to meet you at the DCC. I to had the chance to spend some time with Efren and Busty. I was out hitting balls around for the banks and Busty came out and ask me if he could hit some with me and of course i said yes. Well it wasn't long before Efren came up and took the stick from Busty and started hitting balls also. Before i knew it This went on for about 45 minutes or so and i did ask him about a book and he did tell me it was in the works. I have to say they are two of the best people i have ever had the pleasure of chatting with while. I get to see them a lot when we clean the tables but it is a lot different when you can just stand and chat with them for a while. They make you feel like one of their own and that is a great feeling. I am glad you got to share this also. I wish you the best in your adventure, Doug

MY God Bandido! It was only a couple of weeks ago that you mentioned charity as being the root of the Pinoy luck, but the thought had left my mind until I just read your post. Your words sent chills up my neck.

Story

Joey,

Yet another good story. As you know, I collect billiard books and enjoy reading. I am looking forward to see what he is writing.

Believe brother! I enjoyed reading your "A drink of water for my kingdom". I'm happy for you on that experience of a lifetime that no one can ever take away from you!

So, when will I get to see and meet you here in the Philippines for the rest of your story? Nice title for a feel good and good side of pool book.

I remember your reply was a poke of a little fun at what I wrote. What I wrote here may have sent chills up your neck but what you wrote made my eyes watery. Pool may be looked at as a back alley full of badness more often than not but if you look at it from a different angle you will see all the good in it. The pool community here has more good than bad and it's all because of the special way that these guys take care of one another. They are all un/undereducated and from poor families but they're masters in the lessons of life.

Great story

Says a lot of what type of person Efren is as I'm sure he was exhausted from the week of activities and yet still talking away.

JoeyA,

I just wonder if you can share with us your conversation with Efren about his plan on pool in the future. Did he mention why he did not quite successful lately?

Pare,

I think that would be one of his priorities in the near future. Joey A had been messing around with Ronnie every time he gets the chance. Him and Ronnie usually play One Pocket when Ronnie is around.

He played Dodong at the Fayetteville tournament recently. They matched up on the One Pocket event. I was trying to get some sidebets but there were no takers.

Sorry Joey, I didn't stay long at DCC because of the weather. I didn't want to get trapped in Indiana by the weather. I had a 10 hour drive ahead of me.

Thank you for the info pare. He will feel more than at home here then. Remind him to bring a small tape recorder and a videocam.

Thank you Edwin for the kind words as usual.

I do not currently have any business or other effort consigned to going to the Philippines. It would be great to visit again. I visited there for a couple of weeks as a young marine in 1970 in Subic Bay and Alongapo. I still have a treasured photograph and a one piece, solid-carved wooden foot and hand with fingers holding a wooden cup purchased for 38 Pesos that sits on my bedroom dresser.

I have learned to be open to the opportunities that life sends your way. Those "windows" are here for everyone and I marvel at the way life never gives up on you.

As a dream of sorts, I have talked about returning to the Philippines to play pool where I would improve my level of play by matching up with players better than myself. I also thought it would be fun to go to a World Pool Championship there (to watch of course and to play at night in the pool halls of the Philippines). So I guess you could say that I would like to make the trip but the stars simply have to align themselves just right for me to make that journey.

Right now, I am in the dog house with the wife for spending 10 days away from home at the Derby City Classic.

Please let me know if and when you are planning a trip!

You will really enjoy the Philippines, and you are just the kind of guy that the Filipinos love to spend time with.

I asked a couple of the Philippine sweators if the knew a Bayawak or a tirador and at first they looked at me like I was crazy until I explained further. :D

What kind of handicap do you think would be fair against Dodong?

Sorry we missed each other.
