Efren passing the torch ?????????????????

Anyone remember about a year ago someone suggested that Efren was done and should retire? Who said that? They must be nuts. He has so much talent there should be a law against him playing pool. I had the absolute pleasure of watching him play again this year and for anyone who has never seen him play in person, take the time to go watch him. The cost of admission at a pro event is not that much and well worth it if you can watch him play. Not to take anything away from the other great players at the events, and trust me there are a lot, but Efrens is the best. If you can't go in person, Order a couple of Accustats tapes with Efren playing one pocket with Cliff Joyner or Shannon or Marco Marquez and a 9 ball match where you can watch the whole match. Then you can see the difference. I'm not saying he never loses a match, he's not perfect and everyone misses a ball here and there, but he is beyond all others in talent.
If you can get to the Derby next year, Go, it is the absolute best tournament to go to. The worlds best Bank players, One Pocket players, and the best 9 ball players.
Just my opinion, but ask anyone who's been to this tournament, they'll probably say the same thing. Sam

I agree, everyone does miss, but look at his demeanor when he does. He does not get bent out of shape over it. Everyone points to underdogs when describing 'they have heart', Efren is no underdog and has plenty.

Yes, it is cool. I just got to go the second and third days, when it was just starting to get a good head of steam and I am sure it got even better

Ha aint passing the torch yet... just won the master of the table in DCC. our idol still has magic left in his bag!!! Congrats Efren!!! Mabuhay ka!!!

Well, maybe I haven't seen as many great players as Hemi or OldHasBeen, but I've surely seen every top pro play since Lassiter in my thirty nine years of sweating professional pool matches. In my opinion, in those thirty nine years, there has been no player more fascinating to watch than Efren Reyes.

Forget about Accu-stats, to anyone out there who hasn't seen Efren play, find a way to attend a tourney he's playing in.

In 1985 I attended the Akron Open at Starchers billiards with a guy that I played pool with occasionally. He was several years older than me and played pretty good, but not pro caliber. This tournament was the first time I saw Efren, Luat, and Parica play. I was amazed at how they all 3 calmly walked around the table shooting in the balls, like they were just in a practice session that meant nothing. Earl won the tournament, but I was extremely impressed with all 3 players. During the first hour of our 5 hour drive home, my friend started to comment how it wasn't right for them to come to our country and compete and win any money. I argued with him about the issue for about a half an hour. I told him how I felt and if they play good enough to win, let them get the money. He was upset at my opinion and we didn't speak the rest of the drive. I never went to a tournament with him again. Can you imagine what pool would be like the last 20 years without these fabulous players and how much the game in the U.S. has progressed because of their playing ability. I don't even want to imagine it. Sam

I wonder Satman if your friend would have said the same thing about Oliver Ortmann, Ralf Soquet, Steve Knight, Mika Immonen, etc.

I just saw a documentary about Jack Johnson and how they tried to keep him and all black fighters out of the Championship matches because they felt that the title should belong only to a white man. You cant keep quality out of the equation. Sooner or later the cream rises to the top so to speak.

Efren is at the top of his game. He is so far beyond anyone else in one pocket and all around play. There is no one on this planet that will play him a long session of one hole even. That guy that said Efren is on his last leg is the one that has been long forgotten.

Efren is nearing 50 years old and wins back to back overall champ at DCC.
He might not be on some people's top 10 list of all-time one pocket players but he's showing he's the best now. And has been since the early 90's imo ( after he beat Grady at Hard Times).

I don't know who said it, and yes, that person turned out to be mistaken. So what? All opinions are welcome on this forum and I see no reason to deride somebody who did no more than make a judgment that proved incorrect.

Judging when an athlete in any discipline has reached the stage in which skills are starting to diminish is no simple matter. In my hometown, some considered it sacrilege in the late 1960's when people contended that the great Mickey Mantle's skills were in decline. Of course, it turned out they were right. When Nolan Ryan was in his early forties, some suggested that his skills were in decline. They were mistaken.

Let's cut whoever posted that Efren was on his last legs some slack, instead focusing our attention on Efren's wonderful staying power and his incomparable mastery over the glorious green felt.

That person doesn't deserve some slack. He went on said Eric Van Berg is the best player now.
Oh, he's been banned here forever due to incessant posting.

You cut him some slack if you want. Thats YOUR perogrative. People demean or questions the ability of the guy who I consider to not only be one of the greatest player ever lived, and besides that a wonderful human being, is going to live with the consequences. Efren for me is a role model and an inspiration to a man in his 50's. People like Efren deserve recognition not denigration..

I wasn't running the guy down for his opinion being wrong. I believe we are all entitled to our opinion. If everyone liked the same things or believed the exact same things in life, it would be a very dull world. Imagine if everyone only liked 8-ball for instance. Don't get me wrong, I like 8-ball, but to live with no one pocket, 9-ball, banks, snooker, or 14-1, I think I'll pass. The point is, you never know when a great player is going to hit that same gear he had possessed in the past. Earl may get his attitude under control and beat every living human at 9-ball. You never can tell what this game has in store for us. Sam

I remember that thread. I think it was started by Silencer. Looks like Silencer has long been Silenced. hehe. Congratulations to Efren! He's really the best pool player of all time!!!
