There are few things in a pool players life that are better than watching Efren Reyes play pool. The magician is really a sight to behold.
However, I recently stumbled across an old video of Efren playing in a 9 ball tournament. He was in a situation where only the 8 and 9 were left on the table. He missed the 8, the cue ball goes to the cushion and comes back across the middle of the table where it collides with the 9 with just enough speed to knock it into the corner pocket.
It was pretty obviously a lucky shot, but many Efren hardcore fans defended it as being intended and skillful. There is no way in this situation that Efren would intentionally miss the 8 just have a go at the 9, it was a fluke.
That doesn't take anything away from the magic of Efren, and it doesn't change the fact that he has made many legitimately great shots. It just means that sometimes, he gets lucky, just like everyone else sometimes gets lucky. Why do the hardcore Efren faithful feel the need to justify EVERYTHING as being a skilled shot, even when it was obviously luck?
Efren is great. But his online cult following is weird, credulous, and at times insufferable.
