Efren Reyes bizarre social media fans.....

There are few things in a pool players life that are better than watching Efren Reyes play pool. The magician is really a sight to behold.

However, I recently stumbled across an old video of Efren playing in a 9 ball tournament. He was in a situation where only the 8 and 9 were left on the table. He missed the 8, the cue ball goes to the cushion and comes back across the middle of the table where it collides with the 9 with just enough speed to knock it into the corner pocket.

It was pretty obviously a lucky shot, but many Efren hardcore fans defended it as being intended and skillful. There is no way in this situation that Efren would intentionally miss the 8 just have a go at the 9, it was a fluke.

That doesn't take anything away from the magic of Efren, and it doesn't change the fact that he has made many legitimately great shots. It just means that sometimes, he gets lucky, just like everyone else sometimes gets lucky. Why do the hardcore Efren faithful feel the need to justify EVERYTHING as being a skilled shot, even when it was obviously luck?

Efren is great. But his online cult following is weird, credulous, and at times insufferable.

There are many similar posts. It just demonstrates that the fan doesn't know anything about pool. It used to bother me but I'm used to it now.

In Efren's defense, he is good enough that the luck can happen, like for his famous Z shot. Maybe not so much with that nine ball.

I think most pool players are fans of Efren on some level, myself included. But I find some of his hardcore fans to be credulous or even devotional, and to me that's just annoying. It's possible to like someone while also having a realistic view of them.

And you need to Realistic about sports or Entertainment, why? It would be easier to enjoy their joy and support of the Best ever and if it moves more pepole to watch it benefits us all.

English is a second language for many of the posters on Efren videos…read them with that understanding.

I don't mind indulging in magical fantasy. Harmless. If you've seen those Asian billiardists with the long banks, tickies, long bank ticky banks... gotta wonder.

Stupid guys are everywhere, that's life and we shouldn't pay them too much attention, it isn't worth it. To me, Efren Reyes is the GOAT, no doubt. But I have seen also many shots that he missed very poorly, he is still a human being, no god. But some people like to mystify Efren, OK if they feel better...

They truly are something special, with the text commentary and short clips of to set the vibe.

"Mike Sigel, the LEGEND, thinks he has a chance, but he should know that he is up against the MAGICIAN!" [clip of dude laughin]

Btw where is the main Reyes Cup thread here on AZ!?!?

I love Efren, but I really don’t like the newer fan revisionists. This whole “they didnt have a chance against The Magician” posts has a whole generation of fans not believing that Efren didnt make that many finals and that he came in 2nd more than the wins against the other Hall of Famers of his generation. Efren always pays homage to the players that beat him over and over.

Most of Efren best shots are seen million times. Some guys just want views and get some fluke in and make video from it to get views..
So basically they are lying but it is just to get you click videos..

this.. youtube content creation is often cynical

Indulge me while I chuckle as remind my elderly self only slightly off-topic:

No one has ever seen the words "Mosconi" and "fluke" in the same sentence.

Arnaldo ~ Dammit . . . I just did exactly that in a sentence. Never mind.

Excuse me, but I used to practice a lot of kick shots. I was practicing the Z-shot before Efren made it against Earl. It is amazing how accurate you can get at kicking balls in if you put in the practice. The Z-shot was not luck when Efren played it. I can assure you that at his level of skill, there is not way he is going to kick at a shot like that just to hit it. He will always be playing to either make the ball or get safe. He was playing the Z-shot, and probably had a high degree of confidence that he could make it. By the way, if you observe Earl's reaction, he doesn't seem to think it was luck either.
