Efren Reyes fluke 9 ball against Appleton 2012 US Open

What if it was the final shot to win the open?

I would feel the same way. Rolls are typically going to favor one player over the other in a race to 11. A hill-hill match where both players play great is a great match regardless of where the rolls choose to show up.

Celebration?????????

You call that a celebration? After 20 games of hard fought Nine ball I think that amount of joy in winning a match is OK.

Just look at the NFL players celebrations when they make a 10 yard run or pass play. You would think they won the Super bowl.

Looking at how the 4-9 are sitting, I would say he was trying to carom the 4 in the corner off the 9. Doing that would also have a good chance of making the 9 in the side. He hit it hard to get the cb back up table and because of the angle of the carom. He got lucky. It happens. Just tends to sting a little extra when both are on the hill.

You feel for Appleton to lose that way. Anyone who has played pool long enough has seen this happen double hill.

That said, im totally ok with the display of emotion by Efren. If you cannot show that kind of happiness after winning double hill against the two time defending US Open champion, then when can you?

Exactly...

Are you sure about all that Neil??

This!

Plus, Efren was trying to put as much distance as possible between the ob and cb, which he succeeded, it just so happen he made the 9 (which was his main intention) in the weirdest possible way...

We're in for a treat guys. Today's evening session will feature this match.

Darren Appleton vs. Efren Reyes

Lucky rolls are part of 9-ball. Why not eliminate hill-hill wins, and make it to win by a margin of 2 or more games.

I think you should have to call the 9 ball- no 9 ball on the break as well. Why not?

Because the majority of people are entertained by shots like this (See the crowd's reaction) and they haven't completely given up yet on trying to sell tickets.

Luck is all a part of the game of 9-ball

I personally don't think it's inappropriate for Efren to celebrate the way he did. I do agree that a certain amount of restraint is needed for how much you celebrate but an initial celebration is perfectly fine. It's a sport, I honestly think the only time I felt it was inappropriate was when Earl beat Busty in Cardiff where Earl jumped on the table..with the death of Busty's daughter during the tournament and how much it would have meant for him to win, I felt it was very insensitive for earl to celebrate his victory in such a boastful way...but that's just me

I hope Efren poops on everyone.

Keep up the good work.
I hope his opponenets leave his matches crying about it in the hallway.

Funny how people can watch a match where a guy loses 11-2 because every roll goes against him, and give credit to the other guy for playing such a strong set - but then they turn around and watch a match where a guy plays world class pool for 20 racks, but because of a fluke in the 21st say the guy no longer deserves credit for his performance, and he shouldn't be allowed to celebrate.

People need to wake up and realize that the rolls play a huge part in almost every 9-ball match. Always have, always will. That match was as exciting as hell, and one fluke shot doesn't change that - if it had happened in rack 2 it would have been just as big, but nobody would have even mentioned it.

Aaron

Yet, if someone , lets say Earl or Mike Dechaine would've done the same thing against Efren, then everyone would be ready to lynch them. Just because it's efren, doesn't give him the right to be so unsportsmanlike. that was just downright disrespectful and a disgrace to professional pool.

Look, at least Efren didn't wave his magic wand when the match was over and turn Darren into a toad or anything like that.

It's against appleton though, the king of unsportsmanlike and disrespectful celebration. Efren could have celebrated by taking a liquid dump in appleton's case and i would have still cheered.

Read my mind.

playing "call pocket" Efren would have played this shot differently

Who ever is saying it is fluke do not know 9 ball. Look at the white position, when shot is ended it is at other end of table and 4 ball is snookered this was the objective and was accomplished, if he got something extra on the way why not it is 9 ball and no shot calling

This was exciting, but if they would have been playing "call pocket" Efren would have played this shot differently (kicking to give himself a chance to seperate the balls for a safety).

Pros really should be required to play "call shot" and the incoming player "has the option to pass the shot" (unless a safety is played) imho
