Efren

The Mizerak Senior was still being played when Efren turned 50...
....he was welcome to play.

If Efren shows up at a senior event, is the rest of the field playing for second place?

I would say 'no way,' Todd.

Longevity (into older age) in any game or sport requires two things:

1) Decent health in order to continue participating in one's activity, and
2) Continued participation in that activity in order to maintain muscle memory/knowledge set.

Efren is getting old and he doesn't look very healthy for his age (what, 60?).
No matter what knowledge set he has accumulated, he has to be able to participate adequately.
I love Efren, but unfortunately, his play is deteriorating every year.

There are lot of 50- and 60-somethings that are very healthy and can play jam-up.
Given the right circumstances, Efren doesn't have to win (at any senior event);
especially the older he gets, I imagine the healthy 60-somethings are going to start "barbequing" him more and more.

I can think of two artists (in their respective fields) who had TONS of untapped potential who,
had they paid more attention to their health,
would have given the world many more years of their craft:

STEVE MIZERAK and ISRAEL KAMAKAWIW'OLE.

In one pocket probably.

Whats scary to think is that someone like Bustamante is also probably qualified to play. At this point he probably is more accurate than Efren.

Nick Varner and Jose Parica have not showed up at the US Open in a while .
Massey looks pretty healthy .
Buddy Hall can barely walk now, I think.
I don't know who else would be able to compete against Efren at 50's and up outside of Earl.

Thinking that someone is going to get over on Efren in a pool game, is like believing that the junkyard dog doesn't have all his teeth, is older now, is getting slower, so it's ok to climb over that chain link fence.
I've never been in a poolroom that didn't harbor a few fools.
