Eight Ball Rule Question

Tonight after league, we were playing eight ball for drinks. One of the guys playing had an easy dead cross side bank, he banged the s*** out of it and the eight ball jumped off the table. The eight ball was spotted no foul, but it just so happened that when it was spotted, it totally hooked the next player. This is a stupid rule for a couple of reasons, the first being, why should the next player be punished for someone else making a mistake, the second reason is every time someone has a difficult shot and a ball is behind the spot and the cue ball down the table, all you have to do is bang it off the table, not to mention the possibility of hitting a bystander. It, is in the APA rules, and I think this is just a bad rule.

You must have misread/misinterpreted the APA rules:

6. BALLS ON THE FLOOR

If the 8-ball is knocked on the floor, it is loss of game. Other object balls that get knocked on the floor will be spotted. If the spot is taken, then the ball would be placed on a line directly behind the spot as close to the spot as possible. Knocking a ball other than the cue ball on the floor is not a foul. It might occur that a player pockets his ball while simultaneously knocking some other ball on the floor. In this situation, it is still his turn and the ball is not spotted until he misses. If the ball on the floor is one of the shooter’s balls, then it is spotted when the shooter has pocketed all of his other balls or misses.

And from the BCA Rulebook:

4.20 LOSS OF GAME
A player loses the game by committing any of the following infractions:

1. Fouls when pocketing the 8-ball (exception: see 8-Ball Pocketed On The
Break).
2. Pockets the 8-ball on the same stroke as the last of his group of balls.
3. Jumps the 8-ball off the table at any time.
4. Pockets the 8-ball in a pocket other than the one designated.
5. Pockets the 8-ball when it is not the legal object ball.

Thanks lights_out, I will make sure our league knows about this, I feel better now (lol).

Not a foul to bang a ball off the table??
What kind of clown came up with that idea?

I agree. Therefore I herebyeth, forthwitheth, and forvermorest, declare this rule null and void. And they who shall evereth violate this rule willst not be penalized nor punished therebyeth. Zzzt...it is doneth.

If you are playing 8 ball and say you are playing the 3 ball , well the 3 ball goes in the pocket and pops out and goes on the floor.!! Is that a ball in hand to the next player or does he shoot it where the Qball lies ??? I figure since the 3 ball was not pocketed but went off the table the 3 ball stays down but it is the nxt players turn... Am I right ??? ED

It was the rule Willie Mosconi played by. It was the standard rule at pool until about 1985. It used to be OK at carom to drive a ball off the table (as long as you scored otherwise). I think it's cleaner to play balls on the floor as a foul, but the other way worked. Some old-timers still play the old way at one pocket, where you sometimes send balls onto the floor intentionally.

Fascinating. So maybe it used to make sense in the conditions/culture of a bygone age.
I wouldn't dare do something like that (particularly at one pocket). I'd expect someone to send me onto the floor intentionally, soon afterwards.

Even with the current foul rule, it is a standard, accepted, and sometimes applauded shot at one pocket to send the cue ball and/or object ball onto the floor.

If it is the oponents ball does it go down as if it was pocketed??

Fenwick...Are you "channeling" Willie now? LOL I KNOW you're not 'going his way' yet! You're too interested in getting your pool game elevated to where you want it! Keep up the good work!

I play him for some small $ now and again but it's more like paying for lessons. He has complemented my style, form and my stroke. I tell him I had a good teacher, Scott Lee. As I said he still has a lot of game.

Nope. Is spotted at the end of the inning.

Thought that was incorrect until I re-read the rules. Your opponent's balls do spot at the end of the inning if you make a ball of your own at the same time the others go off the table.

8 ball off the table is the same as sinking it. Loss of game. Never heard any other rule.

Object ball is spotted at end of inning unless last ball. then spotted right away. opponents balls are respotted imediately.
