Hmmmm......I;m not a tree hugger,and I love red meat. I don't have a problem with fur coats and I could give a sh*t less about the adorable little fur seals being clubbed by eskimos to make an honest living.....But for some reason the idea of using an elephant ear just strikes me as wrong...I recently read a post here about a sting ray wrap that the poster described in glowing terms......check the threads with search feature....I think you will find that this wrap is much nicer......and saves an elephant.
Elephant Ear, smooth Elephant hide without the wrinkles, makes an excellent, grippy smooth wrap. True Ear is expensive, and any cue maker should be competent enough to install one correctly.
Elephant Ear can be split to .026, which is the perfect thickness for a wrap. I would not accept any thickness over .030, as your cue will be weakened structurally if more wood under the handle is removed.
The Ear wrap does have a tendency to grab some interior liners of cases, the pebble grain acts almost like Velcro in some instances.
You can seek out an Elephant Ear wrap in good conscience, as any hide imported is under strict CITES control, offering complete assurance the hide was harvested legally.

I am not sure but I heard that they can regrow their ears after losing one to one of the hunters that have retired from shark finning for a living... That is why they are so popular and available at this time. Of course it is advisable to get an ear while you can as I heard that the folks at PETA are about to get all riled up and start a protest at the next DCC..

I had Ernie put one on a couple of months ago. It's probably the best looking wrap I've ever seen and love it.
But, it is not for everyone. The texture is a bit rough, almost sandpaper like. If you've got a big stroke, and play a lot, chances are you will develop a callous on the inside of your grip hand thumb. It's rough enough that it's even dangerous to rub across the front of a nice silk shirt. If you're a slip stroke kinda guy, it probably shouldn't be your first choice for a wrap.
But I play mostly 1pocket and, occasionally, a 14.1 practice session, so it's not a big issue for me. I don't remember the cost, because he was doing a lot of work for me all at once, but it wasn't cheap. In fact, I almost fainted when I got outside his shop and realized how much I'd just handed him, in cash, for work on a cue I already owned :-o

What the hell is wrong with people. Why don't you try some other endangered or threatened animal for your wrap. I hear the kangaroo rat is in danger of making a comeback from the endangered list, I bet it would take at least 8 of those suckers to make a wrap for you.
That's just wraps, I bet you could get some pretty fancy inlays from the beaks of trumpeter swans or tiger claws.

so do you have a problem with ivory inlays? if you use a rep guy to get your wrap i am sure there were cites used to get the ear wrap...ps if you have a pool cue the tree was killed to make it so what is the diffrence...the tree might not have been indangered but by cutting the tree down makes one less tree closer to extention RIGHT? i am sure more work is being done to save elephants than a tree....mickey carroll
Well, it was either that or elephant trunk
He showed me the elephant trunk and I thought the grain was very cool, but a bit too much -- very deep grain, like an elbow, or.... -- he had the whole trunk skin there! But as soon as I saw and felt the elephant ear, I knew that was me. It's great and absolutely beautiful. And, if you knew anything about Ernie, you'd know that whatever materials he has in the shop are totally legit.
So get off your high horse, and make a wrap out of it.
