I've long been under the impression that the biggest benefit from using layered tips is that they are far more consistent, tip to tip, than traditional tips. I've heard that some traditional tips come in multipack boxes in which only 10-20% are of sufficient quality for good players, the rest being suitable only for house cues and bangers. (I cannot confirm what I've heard is true, so feel free to enlighten me.)

When traditional tips are compressed and/or "doctored" (e.g., milk duds), how is the consistency from one tip to the next?

Consistency is determined by the skill of the person pressing them. Done well they are super consistent.

I use pressed LePros on my pool cues. They have the right feel for me, and they're inexpensive.

I use Elk master on my snooker cue, it just feels right and I've tried many layered tips on it without it making any difference to spin etc.
