Enerva Ladies Asian 9ball Underway!

wow! great pics, richard. how come japan and taipei have so many awesome female pool players (and they all look great, btw!)? are pool halls there more gender-equal or female-friendly? how come the philippines only has two players in this tournament?

I once asked Luat if there were any female players in the Philipines and he said that females were looked down upon in the poolroom. This must have been around 15 years ago. When I told him I thought that was sexist, he told me that women really have the power over there, that the men give most of their winnings to the wife to run the household and she gives him the allotted gambling money.

Good to see things have changed a bit.

I was really impressed with the Japanese players-There just seemed to be so many that could shoot. I think if you took away the top five in the WPBA, the Taiwanese and Japanese would be as strong than what was left in the WPBA.

Shu Pan Kao from Chinese Taipei is still on the A side.

For those of you who are not familiar with Ms. Shu Pan, Kao, she is a very well known player in Taiwan. She has a boyish haircut and likes to wear her glasses and jeans when she is not playing. If you do not know any better, you would think she is an university student.

I believe Ms. Kao plays with a Schon but I could be wrong.

Jennifer Chen just won her match against Shu Han, Chang. Shu Han Chang has the nick name, "the most popular little diva" in Chinese Taipei.

Jennifer is called, "the beautiful babe" in her own country.

Jennifer Chen is playing with a Cognoscenti while waiting for her Layani cue, she breaks with a X Breaker.

Here is her picture.

This girl needs no introduction. She plays with a Southwest, tulip into ebony.

This picture was taken at a party after she won the World Championship the second time. She was there with all her friends, parents, and sister. As you can see, she was in a great mood and had a great appetite.:)

In my opinion, I think Taiwan has the highest standard on average when it comes to female 9 ball players. I am not sure the exact reasons, but in the last ten years pool has really taken off thanks to the efforts of Mr. Tu.

I think credits should also be given to Taiwanese players who did very well internationally, such as Jennifer Chen, and Fung Pang Chao. They were treated as local celebrity, and were even received by the President. This has really motivated the local youngsters to participate in the sport. Taiwan also has most likely the highest population of pool hall per square feet in the world. There are live pool on TV all the time. House pros are usually very generous in sharing their knowledge. It is much easier for a female player to learn how to play the game properly over there.

A lot of the top players in Taiwan are very young, yet they are seasoned enough to compete with any of the top professional players in the World. A lot of them have only been playing for around 10 years or so. I think a lot of it has to do with the avaliabilty of good couching and good instruction material.

In Japan, I feel that pool is regarded as a sport rather than a game. In that regard, it is very respectable to play pool and even make a living out of it. Pool does not really has the "hustler" image in Japan at all as far as I know. Besides, I suspect the fact that it is an American sport might have served to motivate some players to try pursue this "American Dream" of becoming a pool player. It might be, to some, an romantic and trendy thing to pursue.

I feel that there are a lot more respect to the sport of billiards in Japan than there is in the US. I also feel that a lot of players play the game more for passion and love. The atomsphere is a bit different. For example, I have seen tournaments with only prize and no cash payout with overwhelming participation. They just joined the tournament for the competition.

I have watched Rublien Amit play and I think she is a great player. May be all she needs is a bit more international tournament experience.

Here is one more picture of the "most popular little diva" Shu Han Chang from Chinese Taipei. She lost to Jennifer Chen and is already out of the tournament.

Don't let her smile fool you, Ms. Chang plays fast and loose and processes outstanding potting power. Anyone who underestimates her will get "waxed out."

Yes, I have never seen a player who does not even have to aim at all for her combo, have you?

I am talking about combo that are off angles, with one ball cutting into the other and the cue ball is off angel. Shu Han Chang just got down and fired them in, I swear.

Richard

It's a pity all Japanese players were OUT.

Does anyone know anything about Vuthidhan Kongkaket from Thailand? She knocked Shin Mei Liu out of this tournament so she must be pretty good. It seems like Jennifer is going to have a tough match.

I believe the two winners of each group will enter the single elimination stage.

Richard

PS. Jennifer's opponent in the background sitting in her chair is Li Jian, the only Chinese representative from Mainland China playing in this tournament. She is sponsored by Adam Japan.

Can anyone please confirm if it is true that Ga Young Kim has won this tournament?

Thank you.

Richard

Too bad that Amit is out of the tournament already...but nice to see Filipina Iris Ranola still around in the losers side to give the hometown fans something cheer about.

Nice pictures guys. Does anyone have a pic of Iris?

I was told that Ga Young Kim has won. The tournament is over.

Could someone please confirm it?

Richard

I have the confirmed results here:

Jennifer Chen white washed Vuthidhan Kongkaket from Thailand 9:0

Lin from Chinese Taipei won a close one against local player Iris on the hill 9:8

Jennifer Chen then played her fellow countrywoman Fan Jun Fang and lost a tight battle at 9:7

Shu Pin, Kao from Chinese Taipei beat Iris Ranola 9:6.

So, the only players left are Yuan Chun Lin, Shu Pin Kao, Jui Fang Fan, and Ga Young Kim going into single knock out.

In the semis,

Yuan Chun, Lin then lost on the hill to Shu Pin, Kao 9:8

Ga Young Kim won against Jui Fang Fan 9:5

Finals featured Ga Young Kim against Shu Pin Kao, Ga Young Kim stayed in control during the whole match and finished it off with a 11:4 victory.

Ga Young Kim was awarded a trophy and $10,000 for her nice effort.

Congratulation to Ga Young Kim.

Richard

P.S.
1. It is worth mentioning that both Jui Fang Fan and Shu Pin Kao were considered the underdog in their semi finals matches. Especially Jui Fang Fan, who has showed an outstanding progress in the last couple years. We should see more of her in the near future.

2. Although Ga Young is originally from Korea, she has made Taiwan her home. I think it is fair to say that it was an all Taiwanese finals and semi finals. In my opinion, Taiwanese players are still in general the strongest in Asia on average.

3. A major upset of the tournament was the knock out of Liu Shin Mei by Vuthidhan K from Thailand. A lot of viewers were expecting a Liu vs Kim rematch.

4. The female Philipine players have proven to other Asian players that they are a force to be reckon with. I think we should see Iris and Rublien a lot more often in the near future on TV. Good luck to them.

Ga Young is number one in my heart but it is quite clear that the CIA is beaming negative and false subliminal messages to her brain concerning me. I have written every member of Congress about this to no avail and all appears hopeless.

Miss Meng Meng Zhou on the other hand has communicated with me daily with coded messages through my Stereo headphones and i have every reason to believe there will be a wedding at the Elvis Chapel in Vegas this May. I know this may be forward of me, but i would like you to be the Best Man.
