Entertaining the troops in Iraq & Afghanistan

I'm guessing that you are at the Army base over there? I just got back from the AB over there about 2 months ago (4 month tour - yep, AF, lol). I made 1 trip to AJ while there and think I remember they had 3 (maybe 4) 9' over there. While the tables seemed to have rolled somewhat straight, there were chunks missing out of the balls and the sticks were atrocious. At the AB, they held pool tournaments (race to either 1 or 2) 2-4 times a month. No entry fee and prizes usually consisted of anything from cases of Red Bull, gift cards to the BX, thumb drives, etc. Nothing great but they definitely helped pass the time!

What base were you at? What's your job?

Ryan, yes Army, and yes AJ. There are two different places in AJ to play. Sounds like you visited "the other zone". Where I play they have two 9' with new balls and Simois 860. I brought my own sticks, and yes there house sticks suck. They have monthly tournaments at both zones, race to two. They give out gift cards to 1st-3rd. No entry fees. little bubba

I was at Ali Al Salem AB and got back at the beginning of Feb. I'm a weekend warrior for the Air National Guard. I'm a 3C0 (Computers - Networking) while in uniform (NIPR). I work as a computer contractor for the ANG full time (SIPR) also.

I noticed where you are in EOD. You definitely have more guts than I do and I thank God that there are people out there that like doing what you do!

Sounds like the equipment has gotten a lot better real fast (or I visited the wrong place, lol). Ali Al Salem had 1 - 9' and 6 - 8' tables. All but 2 were absolutely ridiculous. When I first got there I planned on playing a lot but after realizing the conditions, I only played during the tournaments. If the balls wasn't missing chunks I wouldn't have minded but that kind of makes the balls roll a bit funny! Regardless, I'm very thankful for all that the Services Squadrons, MWR, and USO does for the troops. Without them, I don't think the time (abeit short) would have ever passed, lol.

And it is a great message! I just think they wouldn't get nearly as many people to come out and see them unless thay were going to shoot some trick shots or something.......well, Jeanette might:D

The brass and JoeyA wouldn't mind taking a peek at Ewa. :D

I don't know who else is a pool player in Afghanistan but I am and I sure would love to see some pro's out here. I just got back from vacation and the expo. I am in Afghanistan and we have two brunswick tables with new felt that we put on. But at the same time folks here are not pool players and do not appreciate a decent table, especially for where we are and they get trashed. They do well for the weekly tournaments though.

Later Ya'll, John

After reading all the posts I get a feeling that it is not an easy task to get this going.

 I am at Arifjan with Little Bubba... I will go to the MWR Director here and ask what is required to accomplish this task... However, it will take fellow AZ's to help line up someone who is willing to make the trip. The plane ride over and back is not something casual to do. It is long, jet lag coming over is horrible, and not much better going back.
To me it does not matter if Little Bubba and I are here when it happens or not... But to get the ball rolling so to speak I will try and find the regulatory guidelines...

I am the S-3 (OPS OIC).

IF THIS COMES TO PASS:
If any of the professional pool players needed backup I would volunteer my time, labor and sleep especially if it meant helping our soldiers have a good time while serving our country in such a troubled part of the world.

Maybe we could get Asbani to meet us there. :)

WGCP has to promise one fast helicopter ride for JoeyA. :D

Thanks, I sent an email to big army, debbie.ewald@fmwrc.army.mil for her assistance with this. Should get the answer and help starting the ball rolling in a couple of days.
As far as a fast helicopter ride? You need to ask Little Bubba what the WGCP stands for... You might change your mind. Besides they have me flying a 2DMD on this tour... (2 Drawer Metal Desk) LOL
