Epoxy/Pin Question

Are you sure the threads just didnt tear out? I had a brand new shaft spin on me one time, first time on the cue. When I went to unscrew it the whole insert came out. Threads were very faint.... but you could see where they were there.

This method is happening more than any of you can imagine. Your lucky the butt didn't split.

I'm positive that there are no threads. I'll get a pic up tomorrow.

As for Mike, I had a friend on FB tell me about 2 hours ago that epoxying and the pin/bore runs the risk of the cue cracking due to hydraulic pressure. Two completely different people mentioned the same thing (cue cracking due to epoxy) so what he said reinforced your words even more.

So glad I have access to the well of knowledge in the pool world. You guys certainly saved me from making a mistake.

You most likely wouldn't split it due to hydrualic pressure, as the hole is pretty large, and the threads of the pin would act as relief for the glue. You don't want to reglue the pin into the cue as is, because it's been installed incorrectly.

If your guy can't get to fixing it soon, take it to a guy that actually knows cues. The hole should have been drilled and tapped. And yes, the epoxy that is used matters. 5 minute epoxy cures way too fast for structural connections. Get something with a few hours of open time. The other thing I use is some gap filler in the epoxy. You don't want too much glue squeezing out, so the mixture has to be thick enough that it won't shear out of the threads.

Get it fixed properly. What I'd love to know is if this was a screw up by the cuemaker, or if this is how he installs joint pins......yikes.

That's a different scenario all together. If a screw has no glue relief and you fill the hole with epoxy and screw the screw in to quick, the pressure can split the wall.

I've seen those inserts. They work better in phenolic than wood.
 
I always grind a flat side of the threads the go into the butt for a glue relief and so that the pin is "keyed" and cannot turn out.
