Ernie Martinez Cue

Hi,

Im checking for my buddy for the type of joint used on his Ernie Martinez cue. His cue is featured on www.emcues.com under gallery the one with the "lightning-bolt" ivory inlay.

He's looking to do a nice custom joint protector for his cue but can't seem to identify the joint. I tried emailing Ernie Martinez as provided by the websites contact buy to no avail.

Anybody who knows what joint is being used please advise. Much thanks.

It's a 3/8 x 12 pin on that cue. Great cue pickup for your friend! I have one of Ernie's cues with a similar joint. I think the J&J Website has protectors if you want the plastic or delrin ones. For custom I'm not sure who would have that tap or threading ability. You could try Jim Baxter or Alton "CueCaps" on here for some really great JPs.

Ernie may also make JPs. He is usually really busy and tends to be slow on responding to emails. The best way to reach him is to call him.

Hey thanks for the prompt reply. So the joint isn't some proprietary joint exclusive to Martinez?
I did contact Jim Baxter but I needed to confirm the joint used before I can get him to do the joint.
Seeing how busy Ernie is on his cues I doubt he'd be interested in making the protectors. Also I'm in Asia so i reckon it's easiest I email him. Btw is he still making cues? seems awfully quiet now?

It's definitely a 3/8 x 12...it's not a proprietary joint but he is one of only a few that use that thread. Ernie is still making cues actively. He or I think it may be his nephew, will respond to your email at some point. I wrote them a while back and it literally took over a month to get a reply which is why I think a call would be better. That is a beautiful cue. I searched for JPs too before I was part of AZB and ended up ordering them from the http://jjcue.com/index.html website for my Ernie. Jim's a great choice if he can get the parts and tap for it. Good luck!

Here's a thread where I was searching for a shaft for my cue. It has a picture of the joint of my cue. It's a stainless steel version of the pin in your friends cue. Looks a little different only because I did a bit of an extreme closeup but other than the metal it's the same.

Great, thanks for the confirmation. I thought the same but the website of ernie's made it sound like some kind of proprietary joint or that some form of modification has been made.

Here's an extract:

"Most Martinez cues made from 1995 to present have a unique 3/8-12 joint pin which Ernie spent a lot of time developing for his cues. The thread on these screws begins at about a quarter of an inch forward of the joint, allowing for the base of the joint to seat tighter."
