don't get me wrong, i enjoy watching the ledgends on espn. i feel privalged, just to have pocket billiards broadcast. however, mosconi crane and moore were known for straight pool, and here we see them playing 7-ball, so-so, what gives? anyone have mosconi on tape in his heyday, say 1949 running in the 400's?

Listen Bernie, you live in New York. About 30 years ago ABC did a Saturday show where they aired a straight pool tournament every week. People like Mizerak, Crane, Balsis, etc played to 150 I recollect. Chris Schenkel did the play by play. It must have been 1967 as I was in college at the time. If you can find someone at ABC and get in their vaults you would be doing the pool world a big favor. I will try my contacts to reproduce them. Instead of telling us how great a commentator you are or a top eight ball champ do this and you will be revered by all.

better idea

You say why 7 ball. Please,

I SAY, WHY NOT?????????????????

At least it's pool on TV, and brings some credit to our sport.

The more attention we get, the more we will get...

Silencer, I am sure you can say something possitive about pool? Can't you?

This has something to do with it:
"Biography:
been playing for 25 years. i won 56 tournaments. my favourite games are 8-ball and snooker. my high run is a 5 rack in a row 8-ball run in a race to 5."

He must be one of those damn elitist 8-ball/snooker players. I say if it is pool on TV then it is great, I don't care what game it is. The more pool on TV the better!

ESPN Pool

I thank ESPN for a great month of older pool footage.
It would be nice to see some 14.1 stuff from ABC..
I have e-mailed them and recieved no response at all..
Maybe ESPN classic will show it in the future..

It's great to see this stuff period enjoy it and record it.
In 1982 these guys were past prime.. but they still shot a great stick..

Hopefully ESPN will pick up on the WPC and more Mosconi Cup..

Where is the Mosconi Documentary and Movie that was on the table a year ago ?

All I have to say is if Luther Lassiter could play that good at 68 while fading UJ Pucket's non-stop sharking then HOW GOOD WAS HE WHEN HE WAS AT HIS PEAK???

Seriously, Lassiter is a machine, he just gets up and goes for the balls and his power safes are great. I learned at least two safeties, intentional ones not the lucky ones he got.

Yes, he got a lot of rolls to win but he also outshot Pucket pretty handily as well and made some great shots to win.

I bet in his heyday he just literally shot his opponents into a coma sometimes.

I think I saw some of this in re-run in 1972. Mizerak looked like he was in college at the time, and I think he won the tournament. That would have put it at 1965 or so.

Hey Bob
Lets try and find this stuff. Ill try to find the funding for reproduction. Email me. I am a friend of Pat Fleming.

stop!!

you guys are both right. I collect videos. There are stuff that was recorded in both 65 and 67. Johsnton city stuff, some str8 pool and 9 ball. It was from abc wide world of sports. I don't have it, and to get it is expensive. I think bert kinister has it for 50 bucks a tape and quality is poor. The only person that has good dvd copies of it, in viewable (and i use term lightly) condition wants big bucks and he doesn't part with them easily. Go figure! If you guys want I can set something up if someone has a dvd burner and we can buy one copy and make copies for everyone. get like ten people and we all pitch in 20 bucks and get the dvds. I think it would come to 10 bucks a disc since i think it is at least 2 dvds.
Let me know,
Jordan

Old Footage

The Bert Kinster tapes you talk about have been converted to DVD and are being sold very cheap on e-bay 3 DVD's starting at $5 and I think you can buy them at 29.95 .. I have them..

DVD 1 is trickshot by Ralph GreenLeaf - Charlie Peterson and some strange footage of a guy shooting with no hands.. and one guy with his mouth.

DVD 2 is billiards Hoppe - Peterson and trick shots stuff.

DVD 3 has 2 episodes of the 10 20 club straigh pool Crane vs Moore and Moore vs ? can not remember his name.

Any way there is little Mosconi Footage and Greenleaf.
But some.

About 5 hours of pool footage quality ranges.

There is 2 tapes if you want some straight pool of the masters
1966 US Open Crane vs Balais
Accustats has a Mosconi vs Caras match from 80's

The Johnston City DVD is also on e-bay
and is getting cheaper.

Hope this helps you guys out..

I am looking for Larry Liscotti 14.1 match on video

Well, it is a stretch to call it a match. It is an exhibition. Caras shots pretty good, but Mosconi was obviously dealing with lots of age problems and couldn't shot worth a lick. Though it is Mosconi and that's worth something.

I am very familiar with the ABC Wide World of Sports stuff. This is not it. It is an actual straight pool weekly series of games. Yes, Bob, Mizerak was still a skinny young teacher at the time. I tell you no one has this stuff and is sitting on kinescope in some vault.

At least you can ask him any question that you want (8-ball) without having to cower in a corner shaking tremulously as you said you did with FL when you were afraid to post. You're the one with all of the contacts, YOU do it. Now that Bernie is on your shit list as well as a few others, I don't think he can do anything right to be revered or seen in a positive light. It's your idea, follow through. I surely won't hold you in reverence, but I would be appreciative.

Speaking of the old time players!, I have watched "Cowboy" jimmie more play and that guy has really great cueball control! I was really impressed with the way he played postion he seemed to have the rock on a string!

Thanks for the info. I am aware of the stuff you mentioned. The stuff I was talking about is different. it is strickly 9-ball and straight pool. It is not exhibition type stuff. I will make contact with someone and find out exactly what is what.

No need for hostility. If you want to bring up previous posts Im sure we can all do that about each other. We are humans. We say things.
Bernie is not on my shit list. He is the one who said he is unemployed and with some time on his hand. I was urging him to do something productive that he could help us all with. Living in NY full time makes people accessible. ABC Network headquarters are based in NY. On 67th and Amsterdam.
I, sir, have a huge collection of tapes. They come from not only America but from Asia, including the Phillipines and Europe. Some of the best snooker matches. I have Alex Higgins playing Jimmy White at the Embassy finals. Efren playing Busta one pocket and all kinds of fun stuff. Jose playing Efren when they were young. Its what I like to do and know that this can be done.
