1994 Challenge of champions. Ellin vs. Varner.

Last week was 15yrs old, this week 14 yrs old, if this keeps up, we will have new programming sometime around Sept.!
Not likely but wouldnt it be nice?,we will have to just wait for the live streams on the net from IPT and TAR because thats the future of pool,I like the action better anyway then hearing Mitch's annoying voice. :)

This is really a good match with Varner and Ellin,I love the way Tony plays, sad he is gone.

Wow,that miss on the 5 was unreal, forcing the angle to get on the 7.
You don't see it too often at that level. But I think he just flat out dogged it for the cash. The look on his face kinda said "yeah, I knew I was going to blow it somewhere along the way".

It's great to see these old matches. It is really nice to hear insightful commentary from Mike Sigel and others. I have nothing against Mitch Laurance but maybe he is too nice and hasn't grown in his knowledge of the game. It would be great to see the WPBA put someone in the booth that had a real feel for the game, maybe one of the old men pro's. They probably can't afford it. I think it would make the TV matches more interesting and creditable.

Wow, $50,000 to the winner and $0 for second place. Harsh! lol

I thought Allen Hopkins was really in tune with the player's styles for these matches. I thought he did a great job in accurately predicting and explaining the position and english needed without going over people's head too much.

Good stuff!

During one of the Classic matches Allen was asked what type of cue the pro's break with. His reply was that it was a little heavier.
When he did the commentary for these matches 10 or so years later he was asked the same thing and his response was a little lighter.

Players ideas about the break made a 180 in about ten years.

A "New" Exciting Game...

I was watching one of the 1994 Challenge of Champions matches yesterday, with Nick Varner playing someone whose name I can't remember, and during one of the breaks, they showed a little action from a game called "Bonus Ball 99". The game consisted of 5 purple balls, 5 red balls, and one yellow ball. I believe Hopkins said the object of the game was to make a purple ball then a red ball (or vice-versa) and then make the yellow ball, in a sort of snooker style action. But they didn't elaborate on the scoring or anything else. I assume you get points for pocketing balls and eventually want to reach a score of 99?

Anyone know about this game? Is it still around? I've never seen it before. But Aramith still sells a set of balls for the game (the internet is a wonderful thing).

BTW, what ever happened to Tony Ellin? I saw him play on TV the other day and it looked like he had some serious game. But I don't remember hearing his name since the mid-90s.

Punch his name in the search tab and you'll see the story. He was in a fatal car accident a few years back.

Mitch is the worst announcer out there. Would like to hear anyone else. I at least like to see some mens matches. It seems that it is predominantly dominated by womens matches. No to be bias or anything just an observation.

Well we see the WPBA on because the tour is run better and seems to be organized well, those women know what they are doing, perhaps they need to setup the mens tour too! :D
