Ever played scotch doubles one pocket?

The idea sounds a bit awkward, but I've had fun playing scotch doubles one pocket. The awkwardness comes of course from the fact that you have to sometimes say out loud what you think is the best shot and more often than not you just get silly ideas. But the fun of it is that you get to hear what other amateurs think and realize that most of their ideas are pretty wacky too. ;-)

It's even better if you have a more experienced partner, because then you get free lessons in one pocket. The most fun I had when the other team had an experienced one pocket player as the other and the other was otherwise decent player but complete one pocket newbie. The one pocket newbie would go "I think I'll shoot the six ball long bank" or something and the experienced guy would be like "no, you should never shoot that!" and so on.

Ever tried this format in one pocket?

partners one pocket is a great game.scotch style knocks the freewheel out of it.

I have played it plenty. There was a time when that was the only sure action to be found at the local/ daily hotspot.

I find it fukcing awful. It isn't pool to me and I hope I never play another partners game as log as I live.

And wait! It gets worse...how about those partner games where teams rotate shots instead of innings?! :barf:

Yep, been there done that. Great game...

Lots of folks do that at MaGoos in Tulsa.

Yes I have played it and I learned a lot. You get to see how others think and it is eye opening. I would recommend that all who want to really learn the game play it this way and cut down on the learning curve.

Excellent point! That is the advantage to doing this, it makes you see the game in different ways. I dont care for the slow pace that scotch doubles creates but there are benefits to be gained from it.

Blackballed, as far as i know scotch double is always rotating shots with your partner, or as we locally call it, Shoot for your partner.

Depending on your outlook in life, it can be particularly fun, or frustrating, to play scotch doubles with no coaching. Due to differences in playing styles, you'll set up a shot and you're partner will take some path other than the one you've laid out or misses the dead ball in the stack.

Even with no coaching, it's a pretty good way to learn if you have a very strong player on each team.

I've also seen the use of coaching/no coaching to even out the weight. I.e., Team A can coach but Team B cannot.

Me and a buddy that had to move away for job purposes used to play for cheap races all the time. Scotch doubles, no coaching allowed. We came away with the cash more than not as we each played our own game, and knew each other's strengths and weaknesses.
We got in a match with two guys that could definitely out shoot us and it was the funniest and best match we ever played as we took the cash. The "issue" with their team was their egos. They were constantly at each other about shot selection, shape....you name it, neither was happy with what the other did. By the end of 3rd race they were just about to come to blows. Finally one of em just couldn't take it anymore and quit.
I miss those day as we usally weren't the most skilled, but we sure had a lot of fun winning (most of the time anyway).
