Ever see any real players wear a glove?

Hi, frequent lurker here. Thanks, AZB members, for sharing your knowledge, stories, and opinions. Just thought I'd delurkify myself for a moment to share what I thought was a funny point of view my friend had on his glove.

When he came over to shoot, my roommates (not regular pool players) were ribbing him heavily about his glove. He clearly didn't appreciate the humor, and got quite defensive about it. He did make a good point when he said he didn't like wearing a cond** either, but you gotta do what you gotta do. :o

I used to have problems with moisture making a sticky bridge hand, but I learned that I could solve it by simply wiping my hand on my clothes or a towel. Maybe that only works for the mild cases. It just seems like a pain to wear the glove because your hand might get warmer and actually sweat more as a result.

Funny thing is that as I type this I'm wearing a mousing glove! Spending 8 hours a day with my hand on the mouse, I started getting really bad pain that a wrist rest couldn't prevent. I'd much rather look like a dork than get CTS. Fashion is great, but if you aren't comfortable its just not worth it, IMHO. :)

Next time someone ribs you about the glove, ask them if they know what a proctologist is...

In the meantime...anyone come up with a good substance to apply to a leather grip to give it some tack...???????

Beeswax works great. You can get it at any sewing store.

It's a football glove... the kind wide receivers use.

BRKNRUN, I don't think you would want to do this but Earl (aside from using the football glove) takes the tape that they put on the handles of tennis rackets and puts it on the butt of his cue. :p

LOL.. and didn't Efren have that gauze tape over his wrap recently? Someone joked he was sponsored by Johnson and Johnson.

Hmm, wait a sec, Efren & Earl are in the lead in this poll!!

Maybe they are on to something. :D

LOL...funny you should say that...

I have a wrapless jump/break cue, and wanted to put a wrap of some kind...to add "tack"...I have seen the wrap Earl had on his cue. I was in a sporting goods store one day and happend to notice tennis racket wraps for like $3.99...I thought I would give it a shot....It actually worked like a charm .....except...it made the butt so thick I could not get my hand around it...

I currently have the same wrap on my break cue that Efren has on his playing cue...Electrical Tape...It is not the feel that I would like, but its better than it was.

I am going to be keeping an eye out for a Jump/Break cue when I am in Vegas next week.....My only problem is...I am real picky when it comes to a set up....:)

I will have to give that a shot...I don't know where sewing stores are, so I will try and steal some from my mom next time I am at her house.

You can get it online here:

http://www.joann.com

Go to their search engine, and type in "beeswax" and it'll come up.

Or you can go to any Joann store, they're all over.

Seyberts has this rubber grip you can put on and take off of cues. Some pool halls around me sell it too and its fairly cheap. Really tacky too. Just be careful not to leave it on yur cue too long when its really hot cause i had one melt on my break cue once.

Walmart has a sewing section. Places like Jo Ann fabrics can be found in strip malls...

LMAO, Earl can't even close his case... his cue sticks out about 8 inches. Because of the tape it's too thick to fit in the case. :p

Whats up with that? I have seen Earl wearing the glove and get mad for some reason and just rip it off, throw it and then continue to play. I don't see any reason to wear one if you take care of your equipment.

Me and Freddy Couples don't wear gloves!

What on earth does that do? Help your hands cut through the air so you can go faster?

I think they use it to protect their hands while sliding??? Don't know why it is different than a batting glove.

I need one but I just can't get past not feeling my cue. I had my shaft redone and it was slick as ice and then 5 min. later it was rubbing. Some people just have moist hands and no matter what you do the cue will stick. When I play I have to use powder every game.:( By the end of the night my hands are a blue white mess. I love it. But what sucks is that I have to use my other hand to get the balls out and move the cueball. I have noticed that if I put my hands under hot water for a bit my cue will glide for a while but I'm not going to the bathroom 20 times a night so...WTF do you do.:)

I think the sliding glove stabilizes the wrist so that you don't twist it or jam it on a head-first slide, almost like a flexible brace. That's been the cause of a fair number of wrist/hand injuries over the years, and is the reason why young ballplayers are taught to slide feet-first.

That's the reason, a lot of guys slide headfirst and don't want to scrape up their hands. I think the sliding glove is a little thicker than the batting glove.

At one time baseball players didn't wear batting gloves or batting helmets. There are still a couple who don't wear batting gloves, John Mabry comes to mind. They all wear batting helmets because it is mandatory but when batting helmets were first introduced a lot of the old timers refused to wear them because they either thought it would interfere with their hitting or wasn't a manly thing to do and MLB made it mandatory for new players but grandfathered in the old timers. Norm Cash is the last guy I remember who didn't wear a helmet.

I use powder, haven't tried a glove. A little powder across my index finger and thumb works fine (open bridge). If I try a glove and it works better than the powder I'll wear it but it seems like you wouldn't have as much feel. What people think wouldn't bother me, I just want to play my best.

There's no doubt the feel on the bridge hand is reduced. However, get a bit of chalk on the glove, which happens after playing for a short while, and the feel is back. Especially so if the conditions are humid.

After a while, it becomes necessary to wash out the glove as the chalk gets embedded, and smoothness needs to be restored.

When I bought my first good cue, the seller included a glove, which I tried just once, hated, and put away. After a while, when crabbing set in due to a chalky or dirty cue, and I missed shots, I tried the glove again. Too slippery at first, in a short while I was won over. Not going back.

IIRC, Wade Boggs didn't use batting gloves either.

You're not kidding. I got a *severe* clammy palms problem playing pool and I'll take the powder, youse can take the glove. I like to feel the shaft, and that black thing on my hand distracts me (that's why I also take my watch off when I play), like CAP said.

I realize some people think ill of the powder, but geez, almost every freaking pro in the world does it, so why can't I?

P.S.: before I handle the balls, I just rub the excess chalk on the cushions. To the chagrin of whoever it is.:)

I saw Ginky playing mixed scotch doubles on tv use a glove for one shot. He was left a hard cut along the rail, very thin, he took his time, put on a glove, cut the paint off of the ball (made it ofcourse), then took the glove off.

I think wearing a glove is a personal preferance. I tried it once and didn't care for it. I prefer (at the risk of sounding perverted:o ) the feel of the shaft.

what i find funny is the difference in the different ballgames.

pritty much all the top artistic and 3cussion players use gloves.
I dont know of any pro snooker player who uses one.
in pool, some do some dont.

really weird the difference is so big in % of people using it.
i consider snooker playeres as the guys with the best stroke and fundamentals. i consider poolplayers being the best thinkers of the game, and 3cussion players the most controled players. i dont know if the 2 have something to do, but it stays a funny fact to me.

ps: i use gloves after i laughed for a long time, now i cant play without it. i have VERY VERY sweety hands. i play in a karaoke barr (only place available close) and imagine me playing there with my glove. well i do, without ANY problem. im male enough to wear one, i never had anyone laugh in front of me about it, some look strange in the beginning but like it has been posted before, some associate it with professionalisme. U surely atract ALOT of atention, but if u play in a place where ALL are ballbangers exept me, and they see u run 20-30-40 balls, u can be sure no one will laugh.
