Explaining who Efren is to my wife

To people who are not familiar with the pool world I refer to Efren as the Michael Jordan of pool. You might be able to say the Tiget woods of pool, before all the drama.

I think SVB would be the Kareem of pool. He has one tool that allows him to rise above others, but without it there's not really anything else special about his abilities.

I'm not sure of who the lebron James of the pool world would be. There's few guys in sports that have the world captivated and fantasizing about a guy who really just isn't as good as people want him to be.

Any man whose wife is interested in his explanation of who Efren is, is a lucky man.

I believe Earl is a better fit for Connors, not McEnroe. Connors was just as much a bad boy, but a few years earlier and perhaps therefore didn't get the TV and press attention.

But more, Connors was confident, relentless, and in your face. McEnroe had constant self doubt.

And Connors stood the test of time, like Earl. Connors won Wimbledon in 1974 and then again in 1982. Earl had a similar huge gap between world championships.

Earl and Jimmy share the same grit.

Shane in pool would have to be Patrick Ewing for obvious reasons. I would on been quite comfortable with telling her or anyone else who it might just be to hard to really explain "and to keep the conversation short" that Efren is who Mosconi was after Mosconi but who Shane is aspiring to be or who Shane is now, he was the man to BE and the man to BEAT during his time and still on of the most feared playing giving his age today.

To me it's just really hard to compare Efren to another person since other would have to go "outside" of their sport in order to be rounded whereas pool is a sport with other sports within itself, and I don't know of other athletes that won titles in other sports like that. I feel that that would be like a guy having an NFL ring, NBA ring, MLB title and a PGA title.

I get what you're trying to say, but I think it's a bit extreme. Efren wasn't winning titles in entirely different games or sports. It would be more like a basketball player who could be a dunk, 3pt, and skills competition winner. Or, maybe even is they had a Horse and 21 tip out championship.

Anyhow, when I make the Michael Jordan comparison it has nothing actually to do with the sport or even the guy himself. It's more about how the people close to the game view the players. People who don't follow basketball know that the majority of people who do follow basketball view Michael Jordan the best player ever.
Calling efren the Michael Jordan of pool to an ignorant person is only really trying to let someone ignorant know what esteem the pool community holds efren in.
To those who are in the know, and know the game it would be a bit silly to try and make that type of comparison. There's no need. You already know what the players are, and are not.

tell your wife that Efren was THE PLAYER that 30 years other pros liked to watch when they wanted learn something new. Should be enough to understand...

Efren is the one player that, while being the best at his sport/game, has not let it ruin his personality. Andheisalsothegreatestallaroundpoolplayerofalltime<cough>

Why do you need to explain Efren, to your wife. You guys got something going on? :)

Wife: "What are you wearing, Efren the pool player?"

Efren: "Ummm....khakis..."

Wife: "Well she looks hideous..."

OP: "Well he's a guy so..."

I was just watching a youtube video of Efren at Hardtimes Bellflower, and my wife asked who that guy was... I found myself at a loss for words in how to explain.

She knows SVB is top dog, so she looked at me crazy when I said Efren was the best. So I thought of an interesting analogy that she could understand.

Efren is the Michael Jordan of pool, and Shane is Lebron.

While I wanted to pat myself on the back for this, I was instantly saddened when I realized that Mosconi is really Jordan... So who is Efren? Lol

If Jordan, Larry Bird, Tiger Woods (the original married one), Yo Yo Ma and the Pope had a baby, it would be Efren

If your wife is into ice-hockey, maybe Efren is Wayne Gretzky?

Or if she likes religion, Efren is God.

Tell her Efren was the best all-around player that ever lived (including pocket & carom billiards). Only Harold Worst, who preceded Efren, would be in the same discussion as the best all-around player. Then explain to her who Harold Worst was.

hahahaha  Good luck

Dave

Since the wife knows Shane, tell her Efren was Shane 30 years ago. Shane could be Earl in 20 if he doesn't watch his money.
