Eye Problems affecting my pool game.

do anyone of you experience the same dilemma of having eye problems?

just want to share and express my frustrations that I'm having right now. I recently have 3 vision distortions. before, I had only one condition in my left eye where I see a distorted image of a line rather than a straight line. that didn't bother me at all but over the years, it got worse. not to mention that I now have a blurred and impaired vision which sometimes makes me look like a cross-eyed person. it's really difficult and annoying especially when it comes to pool. there are times where I would just estimate the hit since I could not focus a long time in long shots. it did affected my speed and I feel a bit awkward since I need to close one eye (the defective one) for some time now.

if someone here had gone thru eye surgery, I would like to know how much did it cost them to undergo such treatment. thanks. :smile:

My vision has been a problem since I was a young child.

Since I started playing pool it has been a thorn in my side. I am near sighted with an astigmatizm in my left eye and as I am getting older I am finding things close up are going fuzzy.

My glasses correct my vision but I find I am sometimes unintentionally looking over top of the rims or I am looking through scratches or dirt!!!

It keeps reminding me of when Paul Newman in the color of money goes in and get's new glasses. The friggen thing looked huge though.

Oh well, I still love playing, even though my losses keep racking up.

Do a search for many threads on this subject. I use DeCot Glasses (sportglasses.com) and have for about 5 years now and could not play without them. I know have progressive lenses, anti scratch/glare and highly recommend them if your choice is to use glasses.

I couldn't agree more. They may look weird, but I'm only concerned how they LOOK from my side of the lenses.

If you haven't had a FULL eye exam recently you need to do it right away and let the doctor know the problems you are having. Maybe you are a candidate for some sort of corrective surgery; maybe not? Anyway, get it done soon!

If you have good medical insurance, they should pick up almost the entire cost. I had surgery two years ago to correct 3 different problems in the same eye - cataract, massive floater on my optic nerve and torn retina. This required general anesthesia for part of the surgery and was well over $10,000 (it cost me about $100 in co-pays - insurance fully covered the surgery). I still have a little distortion with straight lines, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I got Lasik a few years ago and greatest thing I ever did to improve my pool game....

I immedately improved at least a ball.


I am now 13/20 in both eyes and at 44 I have better vision than I EVER had!

GL, but mostly I think it is something you'll have to address and condition (mentally) for.

Myself, when wearing glasses, have a prism in my left lens to keep me from having double vision. And the effect gets much worse after extended play. Worse yet, I play in my contact lenses...no prism, double vision...hell, overall bluriness.

But there are enough eye exercises out there on the web for you to understand some of your ailments. Reinforcing eye dominance is a big one, and helps when you are down on a shot, your brain doesn't let the second image take over. Sight a shot, get down, and close you dominant eye. Without adjustment, is your second eye on the contact point, or looking right or left of it?

I am right handed/right-eye dominant, and my left eye looks over my cue to the right. As if it turns inward while on a shot. I'm not sure if I look cross-eyed on a shot (...how sad would that be?) but it's there, and I'm dealing with it.

Also, I think this would be a good time to maybe alter your eye patterns. This helped me incredibly. To be able to take a step back, address the table, find your aim, and hold it around and down on the shot.

I think the more conscious decisions you make on these types of problems, the better or worse they can get. Are you gonna feel miserable and held back? or take you optometrist out for coffee?

edit: OH! I don't know how low you get down on a shot, but try stroking you cue either away or towards your dominant eye. Another thing that helped me block my double vision...which I still get, but am much better at ignoring.

eye problems

I devolved poor vision and cataracts at age 55. Had Multifoca lens implants in 2006. I now have 20/30 and 30/40 vision during daylight. Less in a dark environment due to night vision loss. The promise was 20/20 but there is never a guaranteed outcome with surgery. I would search the procedure you're thinking of having done and enter the word bad or bad outcome before you decide. That way you can make a informed decision without the glowing results from the manufacture or developer of the procedure.

Hi HMS. I had my laser surgery in 2000 and it has brightened my world since. I can now see license plates and read road signs from afar (not having to swerve for a turn like before).

Then I recommended my surgeon to Efren Bata. Dr. Jack Arroyo was my classmate in the graders. He is part-owner of one of the largest (if not the largest) eye clinics in the country - American Eye Center. They now run TV spots in pool events with Efren as their showcase.

Medical tourism is not uncommon in the Philippines. (http://www.eyecenter.com.ph/) I think this is one reason why American Eye is located in Shangri-La Hotel. Lasik will cost a Filipino a little over $1,000 for both eyes. The process requires three days of preparation, if I remember correctly. The operation takes about 10 minutes and healing is fast.

But undergoing the operation will not keep your eyes in perfect shape as you grow older. Three years ago, I went back to Jack as it is natural for the arms to want to get longer as you age when reading the dailies. He "fixed" me again, this time for about $10. I think it is a policy and it's not just because he was a classmate.

Balls on the table? I cannot use vision as an excuses for missing a shot. It makes one wonder how Efren managed to win world tournaments with a blurred vision. It's in the aiming system.

What will definitely change are your rituals before getting down on your shot. I used to press the bridge part of my eye glasses just before shooting. For a short while I was pressing nothing but my nose bridge after the operation.

1,000 for both eyes? really? thanks a lot for that info sputnik. i'll try to have an appointment once I go on a vacation there.

anyway, I do wish that it isn't my vision that's affection my shot routine. definitely there is nothing wrong my aim, but rather my eye perception of the ball.

You're welcome HMS. If you go visit them, you will have to go through four machines and a doctor then they will know right away how they can help your vision. I think if you come out clean, you will pay them $10 or so (rate for locals). Three hours tops. Jack's wife specializes in macro degenerative eye diseases that cause blindness, as well as a handful of consultants with their own fields of specialization.

Actually, HMS, many others come for their teeth too. Another classmate of mine has the families of the affluent as a clientele, including families of current and past presidents of the country. His name is Dr. Ranier Reyes. Despite his clientele, foreigners gloat over the cost of having their teeth done here.

Another line in medicine attracting foreigners is cosmetic surgery. But even I do breast augmentations.

I'm 30. I'm suffering from astigmatism due to some eye aberration (probably around the iris area near pupil). I do experience eye fatigue in my affected eye. I could read the texts clearly around a foot's distance but I could feel the strain on that eye and see a few traces of the aberration. beyond that distance, my vision gets worse and I could no longer identify the texts nor the small images of the smileys. any suggestions doc?

I do know the light cure treatment there only costs at around $10-$20 and an ordinary teeth pasta at about a dollar and the white ceramic pasta for 5-10 dollars I think.

here, a simple single extraction costs at around $100-$200. so just imagine how much a light cure would cost. lol. that is definitely a kind of luxury that you guys can immediately afford over there.

If you truly have corneal aberrations, it is very unlikely that an ethical surgeon would even do lasik on you. The fear in this is adding corneal scarring on top of the defects already present on the cornea. you need to see a corneal specialist and have them do an evaluation, a general ophthalmologist will probably not help. Many times contact lenses will hide a corneal defect as well or better than any other method. If your astigmatism is the problem, you can be fitted with a Gas permeable contact that will actually reshape the cornea and in many instances erase the aberrations. Hope this helps.

Ok, I'll try that one first as well. you are right though with the general opthalmologists. all they did was sell me some expensive graded eyeglasses. though it may eliminate the blurry vision, the aberration is still left unresolved. I do experience straining and a bit of pain when I focus my affected eye too much for a longer period. I do feel and see the imbalance in vision/focus between my left and right eye.

*additional info. I did wear glasses before inorder to eliminate my vertigo problem some years ago. but those glasses are useless with the aberration dilemma. if I may say this, that aberration was tolerable then that it is now.

Although there's absolutely no replacement for a proper consultation and eye with a qualified vision specialist, there might be some worth in analyzing *how* you're playing the game of pool -- specifically your stance, how your orient your head / sight your shots, etc. Richard Kranicki has written a good work devoted entirely to this topic:
