F/S: 6 Schon BW Cues, No wrap, never played

Nice collection you have there. Do you have any pics of the whole butt section of the ones with the white butt? Thanks.

Here's one of all the cues in the case and one of just the 4 with the white butt. Sorry for the backlight reflections, A professional photographer I am not.

Nice cues , Great price . Jim

Jim,
Thanks. Just sent you a PM. You had asked me about these before the holidays when I was still trying to figure out what I have.

I briefly spoke to Evan Clarke about these a week or so ago and he confirmed they were older BW's but comparable to what he is making today but with the wrap. Nice guy.

Bump back to the top.

I thought I may have had a deal to sell all 6 to one buyer but that didn't work out so those of you that sent me PM's to buy just 1 of these I'll be getting back with you later today or tomorrow once I get a chance to discuss the escrow transaction details with Marcus (FAST_N_LOOSE).

A question for the Schon experts out there.

1) Are these "Full Spliced Construction" cues? I've had a couple people ask this and I do not know enough about them to answer. I have an EM into Schon with photos but don't know how long it will take them to answer. I may also call them later this morning.

Secondly. What is the best packaging method for shipping cues? I was thinking of buying some of those 1 cue cases and then put that in a triangular box that I think UPS or FedEx offer. However the cases I've seen are around $20.00 and I didn't factor that into my pricing. Is there a lesser expensive way that still offers good damage protection.

Lastly, what is the suggested best ship method? USPS, UPS, FedEx? I know to insist on a receiver signature.

Thanks,

Steve

I wrap my cues in the padding that we put under our laminent floor. It give good protection and is cheaper then bubble wrap. One roll of the stuff is like 6-7.00 bucks and will do 15 or 20 cues. Then put it in a tube from the post office. They are pretty sturdy and and not to much money.

Thanks,
Is the USPS tube round or triangular? I've read something about not using rounds ones. They can roll too easy and get into bad places where damage can occur.

If you are going to ship USPS Priority or Express Mail, your local post office will give you, free of charge, a 38" triangular "box" for shipping. Wrap the cue securely in bubble wrap, (enough to make the cue fit snuggly inside the USPS triangle, seal everything well, especially along the long edge of the tube, insure the package, and ship...it should be fine.

Schon BW

Do you know if these have weight bolts installed? What I mean is,are the weights adjustable? Thanks.

Excellent

Thanks Joe.

Marc,
I don't think they are adjustable. I have taken one of the rubber bumpers off the butt end and in there was a large diameter slotted flat head bolt (not sure is it's the right term) with a threaded hole in the center for the screw that held the rubber bumper on. It looks like this is the what holds the butt end together. I tried to see if it would easily come out but it was very tight and I didn't want to screw anything up. I'll take a photo later this evening and post it and I plan to call Schon later today with another question and I'll ask them about this also.

It is probably adjustable, to some degree. What you are describing is the weight bolt system that Schon uses. Schon glues the weightbolt in place. It will have to be heated in order to change the weightbolt, so the cue would need to go back to Schon or to a cue repair person who has experience removing these bolts. It is easy for an inexperienced person to damage/melt the butt cap when trying to heat the weightbolt for removal.

Bamacues knows his Schon's.I agree. What you are describing is the Schon weight bolt system. And Bama is absolutely correct about NOT trying to change the bolt.Let Schon or a cue repair do it.But any way,let me know if you hear from Evan Clarke.I am curious to know just how much the weight can be changed. If these are the solid ebony butt and not the newer cored ebony butt, they should be good players in a moderate price range.Good luck with your sale.

one of my favorite Schon's ever made. How in the world did you come across six of these in this condition?

OK, sorry all but this is going to be a bit long. I’ve spoken to Evan Clarke at Schon 3 times now over the last several days to get all the questions answered that have been asked here or PM’d to me and also address some concerns that also came up regarding the length and color of the butt caps and also the handle construction. Evan has looked at the same photos I have posted here on Az and following is what he told me about these cues based on his memory and my photos.

• These are all an older version of his BW cues and are somewhere between 8-10 years old he believes.
• The BW cues mostly came with the black butt caps but Evan confirmed he did use a white one sometimes.
• The length of the butt caps is 7/8” on all of these which is shorter that what is typically used today I believe but Evan confirmed he did use these shorter ones in the past.
• These are not a full spliced joint. Evan said he doesn’t use this method on his cues. He uses “CNC Inlayed Points” and then went into more detail on his cue construction and that’s where he started to lose me.
• The handles of these cues are made from 3 separate pcs of Dark Ebony approx. 5” long joined together (he didn’t say how) and then an 8 ½” pc that forms the 4 inlayed points into the Maple forearm. Evan confirmed this is how these were made.
• I took the rubber bumper off 2 or 3 of these and they all had a steel weight bolt. They were all first thought to have an aluminum bolt and not able to be lightened up but now is confirmed to be steel. Evan said these could be adjusted down in weight approx 3/8 of an oz.
• The weights on these range from 20 to 21 ¼ oz depending on how I mix and match the shafts with the handles. It was suggested I try to balance them out as equal as possible and if I do the math this would range from 20.3 to 20.7 oz.

Before today I had confirmed buyers for 3 of these cues (2 for the black butt end and 1 of the white butt ends) and possibly another for one of the white ones. Assuming nothing I’ve mentioned above changes their minds that leaves 2 min possibly 3 of the white butt ends only left, which according to Evan were not used often.

As I mentioned previously I have no buy or sell history here on Az and planned on using the escrow service offered by Marcus here if necessary. If any of the buyers live within 4 hours of Grand Rapids, Michigan I would be willing to meet half way to make the transaction over a beer or even shoot a couple of racks to test out the cue. Don’t like it then no problem take your $$ back home with you. For what it’s worth I have 25 Ebay transactions since 2001 (user name “Samert1” with 100% positive feedback). Mostly buying but 1 transaction in which I sold a Motorhome for $8500.00 to a buyer in Connecticut. He sent me a $1500 down payment with a cash back guarantee if he didn’t like it when he came to pick it up. As far as I know he still owns it.

If I remember his post from a while back it was at a swap meet in Arizona

Sorry I didn't reply. I've been so busy at work the last few weeks plus working on researching and trying to sell these 6 cues it's just been crazy, plus winter finally showed up here in Mi.

That's correct but there's a little more to the story now. The gal I got these from was an acquaintance of my sister coming out of a nasty divorce, I heard she was selling some things at one of those flea market / swap meet things they have out there. I had met her husband a few times and knew he always had nice stuff so I went down to check it out. I saw these cues and really didn't know exactly what they were but they were nice looking and thought they would make nice replacements for the cheap set that came with my table which after 10 years were warped and banged up. Once I started researching these more online, I realized they may be worth quite a bit of $$ and would probably be wasted down in my rec-room. So long story short I've decided to sell them for what I can get and I'm going to give back the difference to my sisters friend because she needs the $$ alot more than I do. Besides, there were a couple other nicer Schon's that were his players and I'm going to keep them for myself, and all this research I've been doing and playing around my table more now has rejuvenated my interest in the game, at least for now.

I seriously do not know why he had so many of these older BW's. I don't even think he had a table of his own but I guess that's the way this guy rolled, always had to have the best stuff.

Now you know the rest of the story.

One of the White butt end cues has been sold. 2 or 3 more sales pending. PM's or EM sent to update buyers.

Also updated original post describing slight shaft wobble between tip and joint I had missed.
